NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.

Yesterday’s Herald says :—“ A telegram, published e’sewhere, informs us that a native messenger had passed through Alexandra, for Te Kuiti, the seat of the Maori King’s Government, asking Manuhiri to meet the Defence Minister at Te Kopua. Should Manuhiri consent, Mr McLean would go up to see him. At present it is not deemed expedient that the Governor should meet the King ; and we regard the message alluded to ns the reply of the Government to the invitation from the King parly. We trust Manuhhl will consent to the proposal made to him. , By doing so he will show that lie is prepared for a final settlement with the Government. The presence of Te Kooti at the King’s place need not influence in the least these negotiations; but we cannot avoid expressing our regret that his submission was not accepted two years ago, when it was tendered through Mr Firth. If the Government had acted then, as we assume they are prepared to act now, the country would have been saved something close upon a quarter of a million sterhng, and our faithful native allies would have been spared many barrassing expeditions. As it is, Te Kooti has returned to the place where, two years ago, he offered to live quietly, arid where, we suppose, he will be left undisturbed hereafter,
