It is stated on good authority that the Pavb'ament will be called together for the despatch of business on or about the 15th of July. Meetings have been held during the last few days between Biogden and the Government with regard to his contracts for certain lines of railway. All. difficult:es have been overcome. There is a probo'fibty in a few days of Brogden submitting definite tenders for the various lines placed before him. Nelson, May 17. Saunders addressed a very large meetinglast night. He condemned the borrowing sysiem and the expenditure generally. He declared that strict economy instead of bo. rowing should have been practised after the war. He referred to the heavy debts incuried during the first year of peace, amounting to nearly a million and a-half. The Provincial Council unanimously r>a=sed a resolution, requesting the Geneial Government to take earnest steps for the defence of the sea board of Canterbury. After three days discussion the Provincial Council passed this resolution, “That the Council are of opinion, that the E lucationOi (finance of Otago worked satisfactorily. The Council regrets that the community refused to avail themselves of its provisions. To remove any objections to a general system of education, the colonial or national plan would not be satisfactory unless the teaching was of a purely unsectarian character.” Wheat is scarce.
