In the District Court to-day, Beil obtained a verdict against the Victoria Fire and Life Insurance Company for the sum of £2OO. Blenheim, May 16. The rivers are still high. A man named Nehemia Mcßae was drowned yesterday. Wellington, May 16, 5.40 p.m. The Cadet prize firing in the colony has resulted as follows :—The highest aggiegate scoiers aie—Slight, Wellington, Ist; Bird, Nelson, 2nd ; Lynch, Auckland, 3rd ; Cook, Hult, 4th ; Maxtou, Wellington, sth. Christchurch, Mav 16, 4.40 p.m. The Superintendent has personally laid papeis on the table of the House instead of sending them through his Executive. A motion legretling the adoption of such an unusual course was shelved after a warm debate. The Executive pleaded that they coidd not work harmoniously with the Superintendent, and challenged him to tesign, which he has lefused to do. A small piece of land in the city has been sold for a sum equal to £16,800 per act e.
The Sleele-Howard Troupe are moderately successful. 7.30 p.m. In consequence of the disagicement between the Superintendent and the Piovincial Council, a movement is afloat to dissolve llie Council, in older to test whether the Superintendent or the Executive possess the confidence of their constituents. 7.30 p,tn. The Whitaker and London case came, on again in the Appeal Court to day. Whitaker, assisted by Travers, appealed for the petitioners ; the Attorney-General and Brandon for the Crown. A discussion aros'- as to wln-ther Judge Johnson, who line] acted as Commissioner, should sit on the Bench or he removed. The case is still proceeding. Dunedin, May 16th. The debate upon the Education Bid is proceeding. A resolution to exclude the Bible and religious education was negatived by 27 to 13. _ Mervyn’s motion authorising the Government to reduce the rents on agricultural leases to Is 6d per acre, in the event of the Land Bill not passing the Assembly, was carried. A pioposal to ask the Assembly to increase the miners’ rights’ fees for Clunese to £2. and to reduce the duty on gold at the rate of threepence yearly, was met by an amendment of Mr Reid’s for simply reducing the gold duty. The amendment was carried. Mr Reid has postponed his financial statement.
