POLICE COURT.— Yesterday. (Before Dr. KiLGOUR, Esq., J.P., and E. W. PUCKEY, Esq., J.P.) Stealing from the Person.— Jane Crick was charged with stealing from the person of John Harris, at Grahauistown, on the lltli inst., four one pound notes and a broker’s sale note for ten shares in the Cure G.M.Co. —Mr Dodd appeared for defendant, who pleaded not guilty, and the learned counsel said he had only just received his instructions, and asked for a remand until Wednesday, for the attendance of witnesses for the defence. The application was granted, and the prisoner accordingly stood remanded until Wednesday next. Breach of the Peace. —John Williams pleaded guilty to the charge of committing a breach of the peace in the sight of Constable Madell on Saturday last.—The officer stated that on Saturday night, about half-past eleven o’clock, a youngwoman came to him,and asked him to see her to the Wharf Hotel as this man (prisoner) wasfollowingher. Justthen prisoner came up and struck the woman several times. The defendant said the woman had provoked him several times, and when she called the constable he was so annoyed that he struck her.—The Bench said this appeared a very cowardly assault, and called upon defendant to find securities to keep the peace for the next six months—himself in £SO, and two sureties of £25 each. —Mr Bullen stated that defendant had been previously convicted of a breach of the peace, but this the latter denied,saying that he was never intlieCourt but once bei’or , and then as plaintiff in a civil action. —Mr Bullen said he would withdraw the statement of previous conviction as he was not in a position to prove it. Breach of Licenced Victuallers’Act. —Robert Easter, landlord of the “ Ancient Briton” hotel with harbouring prostitutes, and also with causing unnecessary delay in admittingConstableConghlin into the house on the night of the 7th inst.— On the application of Mr Tyler, who appeared for defendant, the case was adjourned until Wednesday next.
