KAUERANGA HIGHWAY DISTRICT BOARD.

A meeting of the Kaueranga District Board was held last evening. Present: Mr Burgess; in the chair ; and Messrs Lipsey, Scott, and Mills. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Mills stated that the Engineer, Mr Wallnutt, and himself, had inspected tlie footpath in Bailey-street, and thought it best to make the footpatli on the opposite side of the street, to open the water-tables, and make a crossing into the Pound. Mr Lciiipriere had promised to supply gravel. The Chairman stated that it had been resolved to clear up the list of outstanding rates, and to sue all parties in arrear. The Chairman said lie had visited the contractors’ works in Sealey-street, and found them progressing favourably. The Secretary stated that no reply had been received relative to the Cemetery and Recreation Ground. RETURNS.

To which has to be added the amount of rates for 1870-71. The Chairman said the collection of rates had not been properly attended to. Mr Scott asked how it was that the Secretary had stated at a former meeting there were 100 summonses out when very few had been taken out. The Secretary said he had been summonsing largely. Mr Lifsey said the Board had been deceived in this matter. The Chairman said he objected to giing on any further with the works until some more money was obtainod. With

regard to the rates most outstanding were of small amount. He thought it wou'd be ’well to adjourn this part of the business until next evening. DEPUTATIONS. Messrs Stilwell and Bently, as a deputation from Sealey street, waited upon the Board requesting that something might be done to carry off the water in that locality. The Board said this should be attended to. Mr Mills suggested that the Engineer should have the use of two extra men for a fortnight to attend to this and similar jobs. The Chairman said he was for stopping all works until more rates came in. Messrs Gibbons and Lamb waited upon the Board asking for something to be done for the road near the gas works. The Chairman said as they were so very short of funds that the only way such works could be undertaken would be by pledging the rates for next year, and getting the parties requiring the works to make an advance. Mr Morgan and Mr Rose asked the Board to do something to the footpath in Grey street, near Mr Rose’s bouse. Mr Lipsey said the Board was now close on to £4OO in debt, and it was very hard for the Board to find the money for these tilings. The Board was already personally responsible for overdraft. The Chairman said as the expense would onl}’ be about thirty shillings, therefore, the parties themselves could easily subscribe for it. After some discussion, it was resolved that the work should be done if the rates would at all allow it. Messrs Perry, Bull, Quinlivan, and others waited upon the Board relative to the road from the Una Machine to Mr Perry’s place. Mr Quinlivan sanl he would himself contribute to assist the Board in the work. The Chairman said when they got the £SOO from the Superintendent this should he attended to, but they could get no definite answer from them. The Chairman said it would he discussed how far the Board would be justified in anticipating next year’s rates, and then an answer could be given. poundkeeper’s resignation. A letter was read from George Lipsey, poundkeeper, resigning his office from the 29th inst. It wss decided to send an answer after the meeting next evening, and that Mr Lipsey he requested to attend upon the Board, with hooks, etc., preparatory to a successor being appointed. ROAD TO THE NEW SAW MILL. The following letter from Mr Heron was read : To the Chairman and Trustees of the Ivauaeranga District Board.

Gentlemen, —I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Secretary’s letter of the 18th inst., stating that you were willing that I should expend a sum of £25 in the formation of that portion of Follen-street required to give access to the proposed mill, fifteen pounds of which you wound refund out of next year's rates. In reply, I beg to say that, after making a careful calculation of the cost, and consultation with your engineer, I find the work cannot he done under £SO. Under these circumstances, I feel that too large a proportion of the cost would fall upon me. If, therefore, you are prepared to divide the exp-nse, and pay £25 out of future rates, I will undertake to proceed with the work at once. An early reply will oblige, gentlemen, yours, &c., James Heron.

DEPUTATION. Mr Crihb waited upon the Board relative to the footpath at the corner of Ilape Creek Hoad and Rolleston-street. It was resolved that the matter should stand over for the present. NEXT YEAR’S RATES. The Board now consulted as to their powers to anticipate next year’s rates, and referred to the Act, which, however, did not appear to throw much light on the subject. Mr Lipsey suggested that the opinion of the Board’s legal adviser (Mr Tyler) be taken on the subject.. The Secretary said the previous Board had anticipated this year’s rates. Mr Scott said this was so, and that Dr Kilgour had satisfied himself that the Board was justified in taking this course of action. It was resolved to take counsel’s opinion on motion of Mr Lipsey, seconded by Mr Scott. THE £SOO SUBSIDY. Mr Lipsey moved that the Secretary be instructed to write to the Superintendent asking him for the balance of the subsidy. Engineer's Report.
