VOLUNTEERING.

The Engineer Cadets, to the number of about 25, assembled for drill last night, at the Volunteer Ilall. After being put through various movements for about an hour and a-iialf, the lads were marched over to Champion’s Boarding-house, where they indulged in a variety of games for a couple of hours, and then partook of an excellent tea, provided for them by Captain Goldsmith, and which they naturally enjoyed very much. Captain Goldsmith expresses himself as highly pleased with the behaviour of the lads, who conducted themselves admirably ad through. They were dismissed about 9.30 p m., and returned to their homes very much satisfied with their evening’s amusement, so kindly provided for them by Captain Goldsmith. MONTHLY INSPECTION. The whole of the companies composing the Rifle Brigade, and the T.R.IL ami Engineer Cadet Corps, will assemble this afternoon, at 4 o’clock, for the monthly inspection of the Major cornu i: >g the district. After parade the men will be asked whether they will go to Auckland on the Queen’s Birthday or remnhi m their own district. Of course the majority' will leave the decision final. We are informed that the Hon. D. McLean signified his willingness of laying the Colonial-Govcrn-p.s. Luna on to convey the Thames Volunteers to Auckland and back, if that vessel had completed her repairs by that date. If the Defence Minister does not lay on the Luna, we should imagine he will charter another vessel. We are also informed that the Government Transit' Store at Grahamstown will be at the disposal of the Volunteers for drill, by the consent of the Defence Minister. Also, that at a meeting of the officers of the various Auckland Volunteer Companies, it was agreed that the whole of the Volunteers j available in the town and country should | meet the Thames Volunteers on the Queen’s Birthday, and if our Volunteers ! do proceed to Auckland, we have no doubt that with 2,000 men something like a field day may he expected. The Governor will no doubt he present. No. 1 Royals and the Thames Rille Rangers request that the men of each company will muster well to-day for the monthly inspection, and to give their opinion of going to Auckland on the Queen’s Birthday, &c. riu/.E FIRING. The prize firing of the Thames Scottish will take place to-day at the Tararu Butts, in two squads, one at 10 a.m. and the other at 1 p.tn.
