POLICE GOURff’. — Yesterday. (Before Dr Kilgotir J.V.) Drunkenness. —Alice Mills, charged with being drunk and disorderly in Brownstreet, Grahamstown, pleaded not guilty, saying, “It was a mistake.” Sergeant Egan having proved the offence, the accused was lined 20s, or 48 hours’ imprisonment. Vagrancy. —Ellen Ilyder, olios Campbell, was charged with having no visible lawful means of support. Defendant pleaded not guilty, saying she worked when she could get work to do. It was proved that prisoner had been twice convicted in this (Joint —once of being a common prostitute.—Detective Murphy stated that he had known the prisoner fora longtime, and she had never tried to earn an honest living. She lived by prostitution, and was a constant source of complaint to the residents in the neighbourhood in which she lived.—The Bench sentenced her to one month’s imprisonment. Larceny. —Andrew Muir was charged with stealing one spirit level, of the value of 12s Gd, the property of Patrick Leahey, at Giahamstown, on the 30th March.— Defendant said he found the level on- the footpath.—Air Bullen said this amounted to a plea of not guilty. The accused had only been brought up from Coromandel the previous night, and there had been no time to inform the prosecutor, or bring other evidence forward. He would therefore ask for a remand until next day.— The remand was granted accordingly. The Court then adjourned.
