Cadet Balneavis won the Cadets’ race after a fine struggle. Phillips is the winner of the Volunteer race, and also of the boys’ race. The walking mile race was won by Low. The schedule of the Poverty and Charleston Gold Mining Company has been confirmed in the District Court without opposition. Further intelligence is to hand respecting the Waikato goldfields. It states that the gold-bearing area is not confined to the Taringamutu river, but extends for many miles around Tulma. The formation of the country is of clay and slate. Itewi has got a lot of nice specimens, taken from the gravel beds of the creeks. Speculators are already at work endeavouring to obtain a Paso or a sale of the ground from the natives. The native track from Alexandra to the field is about 70 miles long. Sharemarket rather quiet during the day. The following stocks are in demand :—Central Italy, at 35s ; Cures, at 30s ; Golconda, at 38s; and also Nonpareils. WELLINGTON. Tuesday, 7.30 p.m. A “ New Zealand Gazette” published to-day contains a notification of the further prorogation of the Assembly until the 29th of May. NAPIER. Tuesday. The s.s. Rangatira has sailed for Auckland.
