A DOUBLE MAORI MARRIAGE.
Yesterday afternoon, a ceremony took place in ,'rhorilaml which wc lake to be the first of the kind that has ever been known in the country. Two well-known Maori chiefs were united in the bonds of wedlock, according to the Marriage Act, to their own wives, by Mr E. A. Power, ihe Registrar of the District.. The first couple wi re Mereniniia Konui and Rniha Kirikawa Te Ng.i. who have been united for some time past, according to Maori custom, but who now wish to follow the example of tin ir pakelia friends. liaiiia W iiakarongatni and his spouse, ID-maima Karaka, who were present at the performance of 1 lie ceemony, were so impressed with it that they likewise decided to he legal!}* wedded, and Mr Power joined them as man and wife for life. 'This certainly shows that the Maoris of this district have some idea of civilisation amongst them, and now that a commencement has been made, we have little doubt that many other natives will follow the example set them by these two worthy young chiefs.
