Grahamstown, New Zealand. April 18, 1872. THAMES SHABEMARKET. Mr John Frater reports sales ns follows : Caledonians. L2O ; Thames, L 5 and L.”> 2s fid ; Cure. 30s ; El Dorado, 7s fid ; Unicorn, os Od ; Mary Ann. 2s. Sellers : Golden Calf, L 35 : Nonpareil, 77s Cd ; Cure, 30s ; Unicorn, Os ; Ruby, 5s 6d. Business during the past month has been very inactive. Sales only effected for present requirements, and buyers of all classes displaying great caution. On the other hand there is a healthier feeling springing up amongst the legitimate traders and merchants. As usual on diggings, the population is of a migratory descript ion, and has to undergo what is known as the “weeding process” before business settles down legitimately. This place during the past three months has been undergoing this process, and mauy habitual frequenters of new places have had to move on and make room for legitimate business people. Therefore, business is assuming a more steady and healthy tone. Mining is making rapid strides, as is shown by the large and powerful new batteries which arc finished and in progress of completion. Many of the mines that have been so sanguinely and industriously worked are now coming to the front. Altogether there is a greater display of confidence exhibited than during the past twelvemonths. Prices current show very little alteration, but goods generally arc firm, and the markets arc bare of leading articles. Flour has a firmer tendency, notwithstanding the constant arrivals, and is held for full price. Produce has undergone no alteration. Wines and spirits show a firmer tone. Groceries are in more request, and owing to advices are firmer in price. PRICES CURRENT. WHOLESALE PRICES. Ale and Beer, duly paid. English hhd none.
