The application of William Richards for the Long Drive Hotel was adjourned for a month on Ihe application of Mr Tyler, who stated that an objection had been taken that the house had not the requisite accommodation, but this would be provided by next meeting. The application of Thomas Brown for the Imperial Crown Hotel, Tararu, was struck out. There were two applications for this house, one by Mr Brown, another by Mr Miller. Mr Brown did not appear. The house was granted to Mr Miller. The application of Thomas Dare was objected to by Mr Bullen, Sub-Inspector of Police, who stated that the accomodation fell short of the requirements of the Act. The application was adjourned until the 14th Mary. The application of John Dooley for the Liverpool and Belfast Hotel was also adjourned to the same date. Michael Driscoll, of the Reefer’s Arms, Panga Flat, was cautioned that lie must keep his house in a better manner, as the Inspector had to complain of the manner in which the house was kept. In reference to the application of John Hal>, Union Hotel, Grahamstown, the Sub-Inspector said the house was dirty and untidy. The bench cautioned the applicant to attend to the recommendation of the police to keep the place more clean. In reference to the application of Hannah Harrison, of the Melbourne Hotel, Shortland, Mr Bullen said the house had been a licensed brothel. The applicant had been in the habit of harboring prostitutes, and had a cottage at the back, and premises adjoining, which were the resort of prostitutes. Mrs Harrison said she had done what she could to get rid of her objectionable tenants. The application was adjourned for a month. The application of Francis Martin for the Ancient Briton, Grahamstown, was adjourned for a month, the Inspector stating that the accommodation was defective. The same objection was raised to the application of Chas. Featherstone Mitchell for the Empire Hotel, Ohinemuri (bush license), and the application was adjourned for a month. The application of Edmund Rogers was also adjourned to the same date. In reference to the application of W. Rose, of the Thames Hotel, Shortland, Mr Bullen said the house was in a very untidy state. —Mr Rose said his house was full of Maoris and bushmen at the time it was inspected, therefore the place was not so tidy as it would otherwise have been.— The application was granted, the Bench recommending applicant to attend to the recommendation of the Inspector of Police. The same advice was tendered to Mr Segar, of the Grand Junction, Moanataiari Creek.
In the case of Jolm Uncles, Grahamstown Hotel, the Inspector stated there was not the requisite accommodation. Mr Uncles said he had sold out to another party. —Mr Dodd said the requisite accommodation would be provided immediately. —Application postponed for a month. When the applications for new licenses were called on, Mr Bullen said this was a time to draw a line as to what should be a licensed house. Mr Capill, who applied for a new house he called the Ballarat Hotel, at Shorthand, had not the requisite The bedroom portion of tm; house was a mere .'oft, unlined, unpapered, and altogether inadequate.—The application was adjourned for a month. Mr Speight said Mr Lascclles was to have appeared to-day to present and support a petition which he (Mr S.) had in his hand, signed by 279 residents against the granting of any more new houses, as there was already sufficient accommodation. He had also in his hand a memorial to the same effect, from the ministers of religion. Ho was not prepared to say that the requirements of the Act had been complied with as to two-thirds of the bona fide ratepayers having signed it. This was only put forward as an expression of public opinion. Dr Kilgour said the Bench regretted they could not deal with the petition. They were here simply to administer the Licensing Act, which made provision as to the manner in which granting licenses was to be dealt with. They could not now entertain the petition beyond regarding it as an expression of opinion from a large number of respectable residents. The memorial from the ministers was as follows : To the Worshipful the Justices of the Peace holding the Annual Licensing Meeting at Shorthand, in the Province of Auckland. We, the undersigned, Ministers residing at the Thames, believing that the number of Licensed Public-houses greatly exceed tire requirements of the district, very respectfully request your worships to refuse all applications for a publican’s license with respect to new houses ; and that you trill use the power with which you are entrusted materially to reduce rather than to increase the number of licensed houses
already existing, which we believe to be inimical to the social and religious wellbeing of the community. And as in duty beuud we shall ever pray, &c. James Duller James Hill F. N'Vard S. Wilson. The petition from the laymen vras asfollows:— To the Worshipful the Justices of the Peace holding the Annual Licensing Meeting at Shortland, in the Province of Auckland.
