TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION.

The public will be glad to learn that communication direct has been opened between the Northern and Southern parts of the Colony. Last night we received the following official communication from the officer in charge of the Telegraph Department at the Thames :—“ Direct communication by wire with Wellington was obtained at five minutes past five o’clock

this evening. Congratulatory messages passed between the Hon. Colonial Secretary and Dr Pollen at the Thames.” This has come to pass certainly sooner than we anticipated, as we did not look for the joining of the wire before the middle of next week, but Mr Floyd, who has all along done everything that lay in his power to perfect the rapid interchange of news between the North and South, lias excelled himself, and we certainly think that the thanks of the community are due to this gentleman, as he has undoubtedly complected the line in an unprecedentedly short space of time, considering the rough nature of the country over which it runs, and the difficulties he has had to contend against.
