POLICE COURT.— Yesterday Before W. Eraser, Esq., 11.31.

Drunkenness and Assault. James O’Connell was charged with being drunk and with assaulting Sergeant Green in the execution of his duty in Owen-street, Grnhamstown, on Tuesday last. —The accused pleaded guilty to being drunk, but said he did not remember the assault.— Sergeant Green deposed that he took prisoner into custody the previous evening for being drunk. On the way to the station prisoner struck him several times on the temple. —For the first offence the accused was fined 20s, or 48 hours’ hard imprisonment, and for the second, seven days’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Drunkenness and Obscene Language—Mary Kelly was charged with being drimlUand witli making use of obscene language in Davy-street the previous night. —The defendant pleaded not guilty. —Sergeant Green deposed to hearing the accused making use of very disgusting language in a voice sufficiently loud to be heard from her own residence in Davy .street to the Police office in Queen-street. She was subsequently arrested for being (trunk. —For the first offence she was fined 10s or 24 hours’ imprisonment, and for the second 3 days’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Breach of Customs Regulations.— Hector Urquliart and Peter L. Corston were charged with evading the duty on 120 lbs tabaeco, with intent todefraud lI.M. Customs authorities, whereby the defendants had rendered themselves liable to a penalty of £IOO. — The defendants pleaded not guilty.—l’. L. Corston said that ho and Urquliart had only been arrested the night before, and had not had time to procure a solicitor, and asked for an adjournment. —The R.M. said this was a case of so serious a nature that he felt inclined to prevent an adjournment. Would they be ready to go on tomorrow. ?—Corston said they would he ready by that time, and were accordingly remanded until next morning.

Stray Quadrupeds. —Joseph Banks was charged with allowing a cow to wander at large, and was fined 2s Gd and costs. — John Coldicott, for allowing a horse to stray in Sealey-strcet, was fined 2s Gd. — The accused said he never allowed the horse to stray, and in this instance the animal was tethered in a private paddock and the rope must have been cut. Negligent Driving.— George Selgar was charged with being at such a distance from li is ve.iicle as to have no control over the horses drawing the same, in a public thoroughfare on the 22nd inst. — The defendant was fined ss, or 48 hours’ imprisonment. Breach of Municipal Police Act. — Robert Kennedy was charged with removing the surface from the carriage-way in Bailey-street, without permission from the local authorities, and was fined Is and costs.
