COROMANDEL.
March 27. Mining prospects in Coromandel have never been so promising as at the present moment, and beach and range seem to vie with each other as to which shall produce the richest specimens and the largest finds. One day it is the splendid stone from the Bismarck, the' next the buckets of gold from the Green Harp ; then again the probable results of the present crushing for the Tokatca will be met by the actual yield from the Golconda, whilst several of the minor claims on cither side have been sufficiently successful to keep up the rivalry, and to expect ere long to be promoted to the first rank. The New Zealand Company’s Battery is, as usual, engaged in crushing for the Tokatea Gobi Mining Company, and judging from the amalgam from stuff put through for the last ten days, a more than usual yield may be expected. The one stamper battery commenced on the Bismarck specimens this morning, and the result will he something surprising. The Neptune G.M.C., Beach, is pursuing a penny wise and pound foolish policy, and has only two men at work on the ground. These are employed at the low level tunnel, and in a few days expect to intersect the leader.
The Green Harp is bringing the richest stone to grass that I have ever seen, —not from a small leader, hut from a firm blue reef about three feet wide, which has been sunk upon below the sea level. Work is also beingcarried on on the disputed beach claim, and a well timbered shaft is now down about 15 feet. The question of title is to be heard by the Warden to-morrow.
The Golden Pah G.M.C. is acting on pretty much the same principle—only two men employed, and eomequently very little done.
The Nil Despevandum has just put through 44 tons for the Golden Point, and retorted yesterday; the yield is 350 z. This average will pay well, as the reef is largo and the distance from the tnachinfe is short. The battery is now engaged on a trial lot from tho new claim on Driving Creek—the International—which is giving a fair show on the plates. The Coromandel Harp resumed work last week, and from the change in the appearance in the stone in the tunnel, and the increased influx of water, a reef is supposed to he close at hand. The Moonlight tunnel is now in 175 feet, and the shareholders aro sanguine of shortly cutting the Golconda leader. The Britannia (new claim) is now driving at a low level to cut a leader which was met with in the trench on the surface. Upwards of 200 feet of tunnelling will have to he done before the reef will be met with.
The Green Flag lias been driving due south for some time back from the shaft, in order to catch the Golconda leader. It has now changed its tactics, and is driving due north for the same purpose, and is sanguine as to the result. The reef runs through the ground, but the whereabouts is the question. The Golconda is still stoping out splendid stuff from the winze, and has now about 30 tons in paddock. The main lowlevel drive is also being pushed forward, in order to connect the two leaders, and afford an easy way ot getting the quartz to the machine about to be erected on Lynch’s Flat. The Lucky Diggers has sunk a shaft in the direct line of the Golconda leader, the cap of which it expects to reach in two or three days. The Royal Charlie, lower down tho spur, is still lengthening its tunnel, hut has no indications as yet of the proximity of a reef. The Wheel of Fortune is sinking a double shaft, the best on the field, in hopes of getting the uuderlie of the Golconda leaders.
