COMMERCIAL
There is great activity in the wool market, owing to the lowness of stocks. Private demands for home consumption are unabated. A further advance of prices is expected. Liverpool sales opened at an advance of 2d per pound. The London wool sales opened on the Bth February : 113,000 bales catalogued. A crowded attendance, and bidding spirited. A rise of 2d was established. Tallow firm. Good business doing in mutton : 45s to 48 6d. Beef, 45s to 4Gs. Hides in moderate demand. New Zoaland Hemp is in good demand. Stocks are almost exhausted ; prices have advanced 30s per ton. The exports for the month were £1,060,500, showing a decline of £103,200. The exports to New Zealand show an increase of £53,300. Money is plentiful. Bank notes 3 per cent. Dividend declared on Union Bank shares at 13 per cent. New Zealand Trust, 10 per cent. ; New Zealand Loan, 12*- per cent. Business has been done in Australian securities. New Zealand Consolidated, fives, 103 ; sixes, 1890, 112*- to 113.
