RODNEY ELECTION. —MR JOHN SHEEHAN RETURNED UNOPPOSED.
(From the D. S. Cross.) The nomination for the district of Rodney, to till the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Farncll, took place at the Public Ilall, Mabuningi, on Saturday. Punctually at 12 o’clock the Returning Oflicer, 11. 11. Aubrey, Esq., put in an appearance and read the notification of the election and the writ. Not more than a dozen nersons were present, and the date of nomination could not have been widely known through the shortness of the notice.—Mr Josiah Hudson, of Mahtirangi, proposed John Sheehan, Esq., M.P.U.. as a fit and proper person to represent the electorate. Mr Hudson briefly alluded to Mr Sheehan’s previous political connection with the district, and expressed his (inn conviction that he would serve them as faithfully in the General Assembly as in the Provincial C Hindi. —Mr Robert Meikle, Upper Malmrangi, seconded the nomination. He bad every confidence that Mr Sheehan would faithfully represent them. It. was his interest to do so, for if he did his duty he would have no difficulty in being again returned. The Returning Officer then asked if there was any other candidate to be proposed, and after waiting a few minutes, declared Mr Sheehan duly elected to represent the district in the General Assembly. —Mr Sheehan then stepped forward, and was greeted with applause. He thanked the electors for the honour conferred upon him, and expressed his regret at the few present, and believed that there could not be much knowledge at Wellington of the position of the district, and the difficulty of comI muiiication, or a longer time would surely have been given for the election. Owing to recent indisposition, Mr Sheehan did not touch on the various questions agitating the public mind at present, hut expressed a wish that any elector present, who desired information would ask, and he would be happy to give it.—There being no questions put, Air Sheehan concluded by moving a vote of (banks to the Returning Officer, which was carried. The compliment was acknowledged, and the proceedings terminated.—Mr Sheehan left town on last Wednesday, and made himself generally acquainted, during his stay, with the requirements of his constituents, returning to town yesterday evening.
