MINING.
Uxicoiix Tribute.—The crushing of six tons of stone at the Manukau Battery for these tributers has given the magnificent yield of 104 oz. 4dwt. 12gr. of mailed gold, or at the rate of 17oz. 7dwt. lOgr. to the ton. The stone was all taken from the small specimen leader, a branch of the main vein, and the country too was pretty hard for working. It is now, however, improving very much, and work is much easier.
Nox tareie. —A crushing of 10 tons of slone taken from the low level, and from the rise which is going up towards the upper workings, was completed yesterday morning, and 470 z. 12dwt. 12gr. of gold were lodged : of this an ounce or two was from some odds and ends, but the yield was altogether jiliout 41,0 z. to the ton. We have also to call attention to the fact that the directors have made a call of 2s per scrip share, payable on or before the 30th of March. Both the lode and the surrounding country have improved in appearance as driven on at the low level, and tin rise proves that it keeps good upwards, so that we must expect the block between the two levels to turn out well. What the reef will he down below the slide remains to he proved, hut the manager is of opinion, from what lie has seen, that it will come in again all right.
Queex or the May.—The manager has started to drive both ways on the lode from the tunnel, and with excellent prospects, and it will not he long now ere they will lie able to test the stone by having a trial crushing. City ok London. —Good progress is being made with tlie development of this mine. Already there are 100 tons or so of quartz in the paddock ready to send down to the mill, and the reef is being opened up in such a manner that a good supply of stone can be kept up. From the lower level there » e hacks of IGO feet on the reef to knock down, and there is a winze through, which was sunk 100 lect and met by a rise from the bottom, and this, of course, will enable them to commence stoning and breaking down much more rapidly. The lode is a good large one, measuring from 18 inches up to as much as five feet, averaging all through nearly three feet,
Otago. —A lode hitherto unknown has been met with at- the end of the main cross cut drive, which was being carried on towards the boundary. The size 'of it L not yet known, but both the country and the lode itself look well.
Golden Calf. —The crushing going on at the Morning Star Battery for tin's company may be looking very well indeed, or it may be just the opposite, hut owing to the extreme reticence of those employed in looking after it, we are quite unable to say what the probable result will be Perhaps they intend to astonish the public with a large and rich return, or it may be that the result is not likely to bo what is expected. Monday, however, will tell a tale, as the manager intends to have a clcan-up and retorting after the week’s work. We must, however, remark here that we consider it to lie radically wrong for the manager or anyone else to keep any news in connection with a crushing quiet, as there arc many shareholders at a distance whose sole means of obtaining information on this point is through the columns of the Press, and wiio have a perfect right to be Kept informed, which, of course, cannot !>e done if those in charge do not give tiic intelligence to the reporters. Central Italy. —The manager is opening out and d riving on the lode in belli directions, with good prospects and indications.
Celt. —A meeting of the directors lias been held, at which it was decided to resume operations in the mine at once; and, with this in view, tenders are being called for, for the various works to be carried on.
Victory (late Four Georges). —The shareholders of this claim have bad another crushing, and the- result is 20oz. 18dwt. 12gr. of melted gold. The quantity of stone put through is not to band, but the return is a good payable one.
City of Dunedin. —A clean-up, after 10 days’ crushing with 10 head at Bussell's Battery, will take place to-dav, and the result lodged. It is expected to be pretty good, from the show obtained. Bird in Hand. —The new mine manager lias taken charge, and started to work, so that in a short time now we may expect to hear of some more stone being ready for the mill; and, judging by the return from the small trial crushing, something satisfactory may be looked for. Queen of Beauty. —The result of the past fortnight's crushing at Vickery’s battery was lodged last night, and ,vas a good return indeed, amounting to 181 oz. 2dwt. of melted gold. This is not quite a fortnight’s work, the clean up having taken place a little sooner than usual.
Moanataiari. — Last night 5220 z. lOdwt. of retorted gold were hanked, as the first iustalm.-iit for the fortnight’s return. This quantity will lie considerably increased this muniing by the retorting of a further quantity of amalgam on hand, and the fortnight’s return will probably lie the best ever obtained, and this, too, till from the upper levels. The prospects of this company now are ceitainly brighter than they have been for many a long day, and when the Kurauui Tunnel is open they will he better still.
Aldurnia.—A lodgment of 2520 z. lTdwt. of melted gold was made yesterday evening, on behalf of this company. This is the result for a fortnight’s work, hut part of the time the whole force of the battery could not he employed. The return is a most satisfactory one, and a continuance of such ought soon to clear the company of the debts which were incurred during the previous few months. J unction Trirute.— The crushing going on at the Herald for these trihuters is looking very well indeed, and a parcel of specimens which they have are also crushing richly.
