DREADFUL MURDER AT THE BAY OF ISLANDS.
We have to record an event which is fortunately of rare occurrence in this country, viz., the murder of one white man by anothcr. We have not been aide to learn many particulars of the sad affair, or even the names of the victim and his murderer ; hut the facts may he relied upon. When the p.s. Duke of Edinburgh was leaving Russell, on Saturday, information had just been brought by boat that a whaler, name unknown, was coming in, having one of the seamen in irons for the murder of one of the boat-stccrcrs belonging to the ship. The facts of the fatal affair, so far as they were then known, are as follow : —lt seems that the slccrer and the seaman were upon one of the yards doing some work together, when an angry dispute' arose between them, and the steercr struck the seaman with a marlin-spike. The latter threatened to be revenged upon him, and immediately proceeded to the deck. He was followed by the steercr. The seaman went into the forecastle, and came out armed with a knife, and on the steercr turning towards him, lie stabbed him to the heart. The unfortunate man at once fell dead, and the seaman was put in irons. The ship then stood in for Russell, and was in the oiling when the Duke of Edinburgh left. —Hern hi. ANOTHER AFFRAY. —THE MATE OF A WHALER STABBED. Just before the Duke of Edinburgh left Russell a serious affray took place on board the whaler Crown and Shield. The mate and one of the seamen (whose name we have been unable to learn), had a dispute about something, when the latter l pulled out his knife and stabbed his ; officer. He was at once arrested, placed 1 in irons, and afterwards handed over to the authorities at Russell. The wound, ! although dangerous, is not thought to be ( a fatal one. We may expect to receive full particulars of both the murder and the stabbing on the arrival of the p.s. ; Comcrang.— Jla-ohl.
