The fortnightly meeting of the Thames Total Abstinence Society was held at St. Georges Hall las! evening. Some delay was caused in-waiting for the president or a*vicepresident, but as neither arrived, Mr J. Sommervillc took the chair. There was a fair attendance. Messrs Taylor, If. G. Scott, Giggins, and Nodder addressed the meeting, Miss liowc gave a recitation, and Master Sherlock also gave one. We perceived there was only one of the committee present, out of 1 :l on the list.
A man named Williams was apprehended at Coromandel, and brought to Grahamstown yesterday, on the charge of robbing bis mate, named Phillips, of about £GO. He will be brought, before the If.M. this morning, and will probably be remanded for the production of the necessary evidence.
Mr T. F. M'Donogh will deliver a lecture on the benefits derivable from the low rate of premium, liberal by-laws, and State security, offered to the public by the Government scheme of fife insurance and annuities, this evening, in the Academy of Music, to commence at 8 o’clock. The public arc invited to attend.
'i’lic only business at the Police Court, yesterday, was the imposition of the customary penalties on two persons charged with being drunk, and the granting of a transfer of license for the Clarendon Hotel from J. Peersman to J. Ferguson. The Theatre Koval was pretty well filled last night, when the burlesque of ‘•Kenilworth and “ The French Spy” were again repeated. It is needless to say that the performances were excellent, and were well received by the audience.
The usual swearing-in of the members of the Armed Constabulary stationed in this district took place yesterday, for another year's service.
The p.s. Effort will make a special trip tomorrow morning for the Miranda, returning the same evening. If the weather is favourable, we have no doubt but what large numbers will avail themselves of tills opportunity of visiting the hot springs and other place's of interest at the oilier side of flic gulf.
As will be seen by advertisement, the p.s. Itoval Alfred starts this morning, at. 7.30 am., for Coromandel, in connection with the Wesleyan Church anniversary. .Should the weather move favourable—and there seems every probability of its doing so—we feel sure that large numbers will avail themselves of the opportunity of a pleasant trip. Tickets are only lls each, thus placing them within the reach oi everyone's pocket. A\ e understand that final arrangements re" snecting tile Punt track, at the Thames, have been made, and that tenders will be shortly called for the construction of the track.
A meeting of the Henry Brown llclief Fund was held last evening, at the Governor Kowcn hotel, when the following contributions were received:—Flying Cloud, £ l Ss (Jd ; Whau, £ 1 (is ; and Caledonian, £1) Is ; making a total sum collected to date of £lO3 7s fid. A final meeting will be held next Momlav.
The usual weekly parade of the Fire Brigade took place last evening. There was a full muster of the members, under the command of Superintendent Hull. The hose was fixed on to the plug in Albert-street, and run out along Queen-street. The men appear to be more familiar with their work now, and, we have no doubt, would be of great service in case of an emergency.
Two very extraordinary pedestrian matches were to come off at the Albert Barracks yesterday. Signor Donato has agreed to run a 100 yards race with another one-legged man for £lO a side, Donato giving his adversary a start of 21 yards. In the second match Donato is to receive 40 yards in 100 to race against one of our best pedestrian amateurs. This match is also for £lO a side. The coasting craft seem to have suffered very much (luring the late stormy weather. There is scarcely a vessel arrives in the Auckland Harbour but what lias sustained some injury. The schooner Dnntzie, from Lcvukn, arrived oil .Saturday afternoon last. Captain Williams reports having left oil the I3tii. On Sunday, the 18th ( be experienced the full force of the recent N.K. gale ; the schooner lay-to under close-reefed canvas for 24 hours. A portion nf the port bulwarks were smashed, also the bouse aft smashed in, by the heavy seas which continually broke on board.

The Hon. Air Gisborne occasionally perpetrates some very dry jokes. At the luncheon which followed the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of new Provincial Buildings at Wellington, he alluded humorously to the condition and lodging of the Provincial Government in Wellington, and said that lie believed the delay whicii had occurred iu erecting the Provincial Buildings was in consequence of the Provincial Government being unable to raise the funds to provide the iiecct,™ tary coin to place in the bottle under the stone,
Mr John Southcott, carrying on biffiincss as a grocer in Qucen-strcct, diet! on Sunday morning under somewhat peculiar circumstances. The deceased had been suffering for several weeks from disease of the lungs and internal functional derangement, but persistently refused to receive medical advice. On Sunday morning liis wife, noticing a great change, sent for Dr Dawson, but ,thc patient upon his arrival was in nrticulo mortis, and died a quarter of an hour after the doctor had been called to his bedside. We understand that under these circumstances the doctor declined to give a certificate, but whether it will be deemed necessary to hold an inquest we are unable so state.— Cross. The Provincial Government offer a premium of £SO for the ltcst design for a now and permanent hospital building for Auckland. These designs are directed to be sent in not later than the 20th proximo, and must be such as will allow of the following conditions being fulfilled :—The building is to be constructed of brick, stone, or concrete ; to contain accommodation for 120 patients ; cost not to exceed £IO,OOO. The site is near the present, hospital, and will he pointed out by Dr Philson, Provincial Surgeon. A sum of £I.OOO only being at, present available, the designs must provide for the erection—at a cost not exceeding that amount—of a part of the building capable of immediate use for the accommodation of patients. Designs to be drawn to an uniform scale of eight, feet, to the inch. Competitors must furnish elevations, plans, longitudinal and transverse sections, and estimate. A rough diagram, showing generally the accommodation required, may be seen at the Superintendent's office.— Cross.
On Saturday afternoon an inquest was held upon the remains of the late Mr Frederick Hesketh, who was found drowned in a pool of water at ltiverhcad on Friday morning. After the evidence had been taken, the jury at. once returned a verdict of “ Found drowned,” but added a rider to the effect that it was supposed be bad fallen into the water while employed at its brink, when seized by an epileptic fit, to which lie had been subject for several years.— Cross,
