THE Thames Guardian AND MINING RECORD. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1872.
In otir contemporary of the 2Ulli inst. appears a letters from Air X. I’. CarI ver, being a reply to an article of ours on the -water supply to the goldfields. All - Carver accuses us of a misrepresentation in our dese iption of the reservoir embankment proposed by him. In bis letter, lie thus describes (lie embankment: ".SO feet high, JiOO feet long on top. tapering to 1.7(1 fee. at bottom.’’ In our description, we said : " The reservoir embankment was to be 800 feet long-, (but this was merely a printer’s error; it should have been .'>oo feet long), and ; to taper’ towards the bo tom to a breadth of 1.70 feet and we still adhere to our statement—that an embankment so feet in height would rei|nire<i base of, at least, JOO feel h’oad instead of 1 .70 feet as proposed bv Air Carver—and. we believe, such an embankment, .700 feet long, would cost a sum not far off+'2o.ooo to erect. It would he'll very small embankment indeed that Air Carver conh] erect, for 20.000 shillings. Air Carver accuses us of making nasty insinuations against M-- Aliilett. A Ye simply never did. and should be sorry to do so ;—the nastv ; insinuation idea istbefruit of AlrCarver’s i own brain. We are nn::ions to see a j water scheme carried out —beneficial to j the miners generally ; —and, we have I already slated that a high level supply I is looked upon as the most imporiu it ! scheme for tlm goldfield, and if alum- j dance of water could be brought in on 1 the high level, for even nine months in j tbe year, during an unexampled j drought, we think an immense boon J would be given to the people. ,

AA'e may remark that some little thne-ngo we-published an account of l’atara's death, the information having been given .to 11s oij-what ,xt<i considered reliable authority, namely, that of a native who was residing... at„ .the saute.;, settlement as the deceased : but it appears since wc had anticipated the event, and at the time I’atara wrs still al'vc. lie has since died, and we hope our Maori friends will not think we had any “hand in liisdenth,” inconsequence of our having chronicled it before itactually took ple.ee, although it must be admitted it looks very much as if " thespi'itof prophecy was upon us " when we published the article in question.
