YACHT RACE.
On Saturday last, tl. natch li-r five and under 10-ton yaeh. - ok place. The course was from the -f, clown round a boat anehot. half v -utween Kakino Island an . hangup. mil back to the wharf, 'i n prize win. guineas. The day, unfortunately, v... anything but suitable for sailing, thru being litile or no wind. Five boats competed, i icluding (lie best in Auckland. A eon 'durable amount of interest was euif liienllv evinced in the event, and at tbe nir for starting (II o’clock) a large on 1 bad assembled at (lie end of tbe < >nm -Treel Wharf to witness the start. All tb duals entered came up to the scratch, th nisitioii being :—No. 1 next the whu Calypso, 8 tuns, Mr Bailey ; No. 2, lid- e, 7 tons, Mr G. I lucre ; No. ii, Ener 11A tons, Mr Weymouth, sen. ; No. 4, L 7A tons, Mr Kilvey ; No fi, Sabrina, . ns. Mr Stoddart. At 11.10 a.in., Captain Williams (who acted as starter, umpire, and measurer) gave the signal forthe si.u t. The boats, having every stitch of sail set, presented a pretty sight asthey stood down (lie harbour. When off I.riek Bay (lie wind failed, and (here was hardly sullicicnf. to keep tbe boats’ beads to the (lood title. The Energy took the lead, followed by the Calypso and Hippie—the boats bugging tbe North Shore to keep out of Hie tide. Off the lower wharf, the Energy and Calypso were very close together, and it now became apparent that the race would be between these two boats. At 15.150 p.m. tbe Energy was fully I.' f miles to windward of the Calypso, and now apparently bad the race in her own bands. At about 4.45 tbe. wind freshened slightly from the N.X.E., and the Calypso gained about balf-a-mile on the Energy, which boat was about two miles to windward, and then standing on her last board to round the llagboat. The llngboat was rounded as follows :—Energy, sb. 28m. 45sco. ; Calypso, (ill. Bm. 7sec.; Hippie, (ill. Dim. 'The Sabrina and Lily both rounded about tbe same time, but not till long after the Hippie. Each boat ns she rounded the flngboat boomed out and set her ringtail, having tbe wind right, aft. Shortly after the Energy parsed Ilangitoto Beef the wind changed to the S.S.E. Darkness having now set in, tbe positions of ibe boats could not he distinguished The following is the order of their pnssin: the Queen-street. Wharf :—First, Encrg; Pb. 11m. ; second, Calypso, 1 Oil. 2m. Th Hippie arrived about midnight, and tl 1 abrina and Lily some hour or two late We understand that there is to be anotlimate'll between the Energy and Calyp over tbe same course, and to be sailed an early date ; but, to better test (be qu tics of these two va< bts, one of tbe ililious is that tbe match is only to off on a day when there is a f reeze ' ing that will not admit of a gaff-to, being set.
