DEATH BY DROWNING.

A fatal ease of drowning lias occurred at, Freeman's Hay, at about 200 yards from the shore. The cireumstanccs connected with this very melancholy event, as they have been communicated to tts by the police authorities are these :—-A young man named McGlonc, in company with his loother-in-law, .John Driscoll, went down to the beach near to the bluff at Freeman’s Hay. Medlone, then stripped and swam oil! in the direction of a cutter, anchored about 200 y ards from the snore. Driscoll icmainiiig close to the edge of the water. This was about one o’clock p.m., and the tide was full. Medlone had reached to within about (!oyards from the cutter, when he was seen by a youth named dillander to throw upliis arms and immediately sink below the water. In a few seconds Medlone rose to the surface, when he gave one loud scream, and once more sank, not to rise again alive. An alarm was immediately raised ami several boats put off, hut too hjte to render any assistance, the body having sunk in deep water. Information having been given to the water police by Driscoll, the brother-in-law of the deceased. Sergeant ('arrigan ]hit oil’ in company with other boats to drag for the body. Several persons dived at. and near to the spot where the fatal catastrophe occurred, but the body could not he seen, and the drags failed to take hold of it. it was live o’clock when the deceased was seen Heating near to the cutter by a man named Chappell, who swam off and dragged it ashore, when it was shortly afterwards conveyed by the water police to dagger's Hotel, and now awaits an inquest. McGlonc is believed to be a native of the colony. He was about 2s! years of age. and has lately been engaged upon some earth works at Freeman’s Hay. llis parents reside at I’anlntire. — IK S. Cross.
