MINING.
Caledonian. —The week’s return of gold amounts t07160z. Of this, 4900 z. came from theTaraj-u batrery, and the balance,226oz., from the company’s own machine. Thera is no change worthy of note in the mine. The work proceeds satisfactorily and well, and there is no increase in the quantity of water in the shaft.
Kuranui. —The usual fortnightly return of gold was lodged on Saturday, and amounts to 3980 z. This shows an improvement on the previous week’s return of 3290 z. lldwt, about the same quantity of stone having been reduced. Golden Grown Tribute. Seventyseven ounces 17dwt. lfigr. of melted gold were lodged, on bohalf of the tributers, on Saturday. This is the result of a crushing of about 1501 b. weight of specimens, which have been taken from a run in the foot wall of the reef. There is a good quantity of stone to grass, which will be crushed as soon ns possible. Moanataiari.— The fortnightly return is a good one, although it is not quite equal to the last ; 359 ounces were lodged on Saturday from about 500 tons of stone put through at the company’s own battery, and at the Herald, where 15 head are kept going. Queen of Bkautv. The manager lodged 187 oz. of gold, as the result of the past fortnight’s crushing at Bull’s No. 1 Battery. This return is quite up to the average, and the claim continues to produce steadily and regularly, the returns being about the same all through. Golden Stub. —The No. 3 tribute lodged 19oz. lOdwt., as the result of a crushing of 29 tons of dirt. There are now three tributes at -work in the mine. No. 1 has crushed five tons for 230 z. 9dwt. 3gr., and No. 3 ns above. The No. 2 tribute have not yet had a crushing. Bright Smile. —The gold which was lodged on Friday was melted, and lost 20oz. in the process. It seems that the retorted gold was put into water in order to cool it, and thus a lot of water was confined inside by the gold closing over it. When the cake was broken this was found to be the case, and so the great difference between the retorted and melted returns.
All Nations. —Between 400 and 5001 b. of specimens were crushed on Saturday at the Kuranui single-stamp, and as the stone was very rich, a first-rate return may be looked for to-day. The show in the mine continues good, and the general crushing is looking up well. The monthly return will be all in by next Saturday. Siiotover. —Six feet more of sinking will complete the shaft to the intended level. A small lode, some six inches wide, has been cut, dipping into the claim from the Long Drive direction. No gold was visible to the naked eye, but the stone looks well, and the manager is making a trial of it. The total depth of the shaft when finished will be 382 feet. A new six-inch shaft is being fitted to the pumping gear ; new plumber blocks are being fixed, and also new driving wheels. The size of these wheels liavo been altered, so as to reduce the speed of the pumps, ns hitherto, in order to drive the battery at a proper speed, the pumps worked far too quickly. By means of the alterations now being made the engine can work the battery at a proper speed, and at the same time manage the pumping. Flying Cloud. This company are cleaning up at the Manulcau, where they have been crushing with 10 head, and a good return will, no doubt, be the result.
