Melbourne. —February fi : The AVealcyan Conference sat 15 days, the Rev. Benjamin Chapman president. The request of the Wesleyan Churches of New Zealand for a separate Conference was granted. A girl named Bayne, aged 10 years, has been committed for a trial on a charge of infanticide. Two men, AVilliams and Anderson, just discharged from gaol, got on the St. Hilda railway and were cut to pieces. It is supposed they were drunk at the time. Father Barry has left on two years’ leave of absence. He was feted at Scott’s prior to his departure. Agatha States Opera Company arc doing a good business with their concerts. Tim cargo of teas, per Hindu, is damaged. Human remains and clothes, believed to be relies of Lcichardt, have been brought from 800 miles west of Brisbane. There is a great exodus of health-seekers to Tasmania.
Sydney. —February G : After their defeat upon the question of border duties the Ministry applied for a dissolution of Parliament, which was granted by the Governor. This action is greatly deprecated by the _ press, a very short time having elapsed since the last election. The Freemans Journal , commenting on the action of the Governor in the matter, stigmatises Earl Belmore as a “titled numskull.” The border duties arrangement lias fallen through. Lange, a draper, has been fined £ls for an attempted evasion of the duty on ribbons.
Adelaide— February 4 : Captain Ilagley of the Tararua, was seized with a fit prior to his proposed departure for the Northern territory. He is since dead. His wife arrived two hours previous to his decease. Fireasli, an old colonist, is dead. Wheat is firm at 5s 3d. A caucus meeting of the Opposition has been held, with the avowed object of ousting the Government. Bishop Shicl is reported to be still dangerously ill.
