Chicago, January 4th.—A bogus San Francisco telegram is published here, slating that Mrs Laura D. Fair died by poison December 30th.—The Grand Duko Alexis gave a public reception at the Tremont House last evening, and reviewed two or three thousand citizens, who marched in solemn procession past him, the ladies generally received a shake of the hand, and the men contenting themselves with a stare. The Duke and party left this morning for St Louis. It is hardly probable that the Duke will he able to visit Calcfornia. —The Grand Duko before leaving here 1 his morning, handed the Mayor a check for 5,000 dols. for the relief of the poor of the city, with a note expressing his sorrow at the city’s misfortune, and his belief that she will soon rise again. Havana, January sth.—A popular snbcrintion has been inaugurated here to raise funds to he given to the party delivering General Ccspedes into the hands of the authorities. The Insurgent Chief, Juan Bcuigno Gome/., has crossed tho Traclia at the head of fitfy men.—ln an engagement on the 2nd inst., Gotue/. lost four men killed and seven prisoners and in consequence Gome/ and ten of his men surrendered to tho Spanish. St. Louis, January Gth. —Grand Duko Alexis and suite arrived here last night. They were formally received by tho Mayor and a committee of citizens at the Southern Hotel, this morning.—lt is claimed that General Emery had decided to withdraw his support from Warmouth. On the other hand Warmouth issued a proclamation that General Emery supports him throughout'. Fort Wayne (Md.j, January 4th.— Chief of the Police Patrick McGcc was shot here this morning at ten o’clock by Dr J. N. Thacker. McGee attacked Thacker in a livery stable, and struck him once with a heavy cane, when Thacker drew a revolver and fired at him, the shot taking effect in the heart, killing him instantly. Thacker is now in jail, having given himself up at once. Justifiable homicide will doubtless he the defence of the prisoner. It is said some private difficulty between the two was the cause of the affray. Clifton Strings, N.Y., January 4tli. — The Clifton Springs Hotel was totally destroyed by fire this morning. Loss about 120,000 dols. Rochester, N.Y.. January 4th.—Quiet prevails though the military and police are on duty. One Rockwell, who yesterterday knocked down a soldier, has been sent to the Penitentiary for six months. The negro Howard still protests his iunocencee. His victim is improving.
Albany, N.Y., January 4th.—ln tho Assembly to-day an ineffectual attempt was made to bailing up the hill confirming the orders of the Court of General Sessions in New York City. Harrisburg, Penn., January 4th.— Rutan (Republican) was elected Speaker of the House this morning by Buckalcw (Democrat) voting for him. —On New Year’s Night, A Iluffaker, of Virginia, Cass county, Illinois, died suddenly, and the physician declared lie had been poisoned. Iluffaker’s wife is suspected of administering the dose.
It is feared that a conflict will take place between the two factions to-morrow.
Rochester (N.Y.), January 4fli.—The negro ravisher, Howard, was brought secretly into Court at half-past nine tonight, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced by the Judge to twenty years hard labour at Auburn Penitentiary. He was then quietly removed and started for Auburn in charge of the Sheriff. Hartford, January 4th.—lt is now believed that two French Canadians, F. George and Edward Davis, murdered Billings, his wife and the young woman at Windsor Locks. They were woodchoppers, and lived in the neighbourhood, hut disappeared on Saturday last. It in feared they have gone to Canada, and will escape. Wilmington, January 4th. —Dr Arnold Naudam, United States Senator from Delaware from 1830 to 1830, afterwards Collector of this port, died to-day, aged 82.

He was very happy to get safely within the Avails, putting his thumb to his nose and gyrating bis lingers to the croAvd outside as lie Avcnt lip the steps to the main hall.
"Wilmington (Dick.), January sth. —A man named Clark was committed to gaol to-day, charged Avitli committing rape on two women and attempting it on three others. One of his victims Avas a coloured girl aged 15 years, and another a married woman.
