MINING.
Caledonian. —Sinking the shaft is going ahead very well. About three feet lias been sunk into the stone, which turns out to be the specimen lode, which here is lying on the No. 2 lode. The reef ilself has just been pricked into. The increase in the quantity of water is not very much at present. The level of their workings arc now seven feet above Tookey’s lowest point of operation, and if the lode can only be cut through within that seven feet, there is no- doubt hut that sinking can he easily carried on, and another level opened up with the present pumping appliances. Uei), White, and Eeee.— I The crushing of 00 tons for this company was completed and cleaned up yesterday, and the result was 04oz. sdwt. 12gr. of melted gold, or slightly over an ounce to the ton. Besides the large parcel, a few tons as a trial from another part of the mine were crushed, hut did did not yield anything payable. Virginia City. A meeting of the directors of this company was held at the ofiice, Graliamstown, at which it was resolved to let on tribute all that section of the mine above the low level tunnel, for a period of twelve months. Vulcan. —Since the rain, the increase of water in the creeks lias enabled thejnanager, Mr Henderson, to start crushing with the old four head battery. After four days run 20oz. lldwt. of retorted gold was obtained, and this from second class stuff, from the No. 1 lode. No more stuff from this lode will he crushed until the low level tunnel is in, and as this lias only 50 feet further to go to the reef, it will not he long ere crushing is resumed. The manager fully expects to keep his nine head of stampers employed in a short time, and then will turn out enough to clear all expenses and thoroughly prospect and open up the mine. City of London. —The chamber in the shaft is now complete, and is a first-class piece of work. It is 20 feet high in all,in order to admit of the stuff being tipped from the cross cut drive on to the bottom. This will enable the night shift to get their mullock clear of the drive, and will avoid the necessity of having a horse in the whim during the night. The cross cut lias been started towards the reef, which is expected to he cut at about 50 feet.
Yankee Doodle. —A meeting of the shareholders lias been held, at which the Deed of Association was signed, rules passed, land Messrs Hornsby, Steadman, Thorlumi, Sorrenson, and Harrow elected Directors.
