OUR VOLUNTEERS.

No. 1 ROYAL V. No. 2 H.R.V. A rifle-match between ten men of each of the above companies came off yesterday, at the Butts, Parawai. The day was splendid far firing, only now and then an occasional puff of wind would coine up the gully, and deceive the marksmen a little. Previous to the commencement of the contest, betting was 5 to 1 on No. 2. In the first two rounds fired at the 200yds. range the Royals kept in advance of their opponents. After the second round had been fired, No. 2 began to gain points gradually, and were 10 ahead of their opponents when leaving the first range. Botli teams were labouring somewhat under disadvantages, Three of the Royal’s team did not show up, and consequently substitutes had to be put on in their stead. No. 2 was likewise suffering slightly under a disadvantage. When leaving the 400 yds. range, the latter were 41 points ahead of the Royals, and at the 500yds. range 13 points more were gained, the Royals thus losing by 54 points. As will be seen by the score, some splendid shooting was made, Hoskins making 49 for No. 2, and Hay making a like number for the opposing team. We append the score :

Majority for No. 2.- -56 We hear that it is in contemplation for 20 of the Thames marksmen to challenge a lilte number of the Auckland Volunteers, for £IOO a side.
