AUCKLAND REGATTA
From our telegrams it will be seen that our boats have not done as much as was expected from them at the Auckland Regatta. Our all comers crew won their race in the four-oared gig, but it is not certain that the crack crew who are to go to Canterbury pulled against them. From what we could learn before the race, we think that it is not at all certain they did pull, and if so, our men really had nothing to go against, and this will account for the Nonpareil winning “easily.” About the result of the amateur race we are not much surprised, as there are some good amateur oarsmen in the Auckland Club, and the Naval crew have only been together for a week. But what abeut the Champion Scullers' Race, in which Clare was allowed to “ walk over,” if such a term can be applied to rowing. We have been blowing down here that we have got such good men. We have had two new boats built especially for the race, and three of our men were to try issue, and yet we hear that Clare walked over. We hope that our men did not “ funk,” though it looks very like it at present. It is certain that none of them thought that Clare was going to enter for the race, and perhaps his doing so may account for their non-appearance at the starting point.
