ALEXANDRA : IMPORTANT PUBLIC MEETING.
One of the most important and influential public meetings that have hitherto been held here was held on Saturday night last, being attended by all the leading settlers in the district, for the purpose of taking the necessary preliminary steps to menipfalise and Council of the great necessity of this portion of the Waikato eountiy being brought into railway communication with Auckland. Dr E. Waddiuglon, J.P., of Te Awamutu, was called to the chair.—Mr J. D. Hill, in a short speech, proposed the following resolution:—“That immediate steps be taken to lay before his Excellency the Governor and Ins Executive Council the claim of this portion of the Waikato to have rail communication with Auckland.” —Seconded by Mr J Aubin, and carried unanimously.—Mr Tisdall, J.P., proposed the second resolution, “ That wc arc fully impressed that some undue influence has been used by designing and interested : parties to induce the Assembly to pass an Act confining the line of a great trunk ! railway to one particular pointy until the ■ country has been fully explored to ascertain the best line to he adopted.”— Seconded by Mr Germann, and carried unanimously.—Captain Beckett, J.P., proposed the next resolution, which was as follows:—“That the country'from Mercer to Cambridge has a river at all times navigable flowing through it, along whose banks the railway would run, thus making a railway through ajeountry having a navigable river, with which a railway would have to contend with as to traffic.”—Seconded by Mr Morrison, and carried.— Mr John Aubin proposed the next resolution, “That his Excellency the Governor and his Council ho requested to have a line of road surveyed from Mercer to Orakau, or some other point in that direction, and the country explored from thence to Cook’s Straits by Napier, with the view of forming a great trunk line from Auckland to Wellington, or some other point in Cook’s Straits, from thence to connect with the railways in the Southern Island.”—Seconded by Captain Bockett, and carried unanimously.—Proposed by Mr Millar, “ That a trunk line of railway from Cook’s Straits to Auckland by Napier would pass through the largest extent of good country in either island, and would do more towards the settlement of the native question than any other means that can be adopted.”— Seconded by Mr F. R. Foster, and carried unanimously.—Proposed by Mr W. Scott, “ That this meeting appoint a number of gentlemen as a committee for the purpose of framing petitions to his Excellency the Governor and Council, and to both Houses of the General Assembly ; and that such committee he requested to watch over and advance the general [interests of the Waikato, by adopting such measures as may to them seem most suitable for carrying out the wishes of this meeting.”—Seconded by Mr A. Sherrett, and carried unanimously.—The following gentlemen were appointed by the meeting as a committee: —Captain Bockett, A. Kay, Esq., and Dr Waddington, for Rangiaohia district; Messrs J. D. Hill, 11. Goodfellow, J.P., and W. Sloanc, forMangapiko; Messrs A. Sherrett and E. McMinn for Pirongia district; Messrs Ilume, C. lnnis, Major Wilson, and Captain Carpenter, for Newcastle. —Mr W. Scott submitted a draft petition to the meeting, which was read by the Chairman, and approved by the meeting.—A vote of thanks to W. Scott, Esq., for the great interest and trouble he had taken in framing the petition, and also to the Chairman, terminated the proceedings.—A number of signatures from those residing at a distance were obtained. —Correspondent of I).
