SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON THE MOANATAIAEI TRAMWAY.
Another of those accidents which are becoming painfully frequent of late on the tramways, occurred yesterday morning to a man named Ilenry Brown. It seems that he was waiting on No. G station for a truck which was coining down loaded from above. Somehow or other we cannot exactly explain how the truck knocked him down, with his leg across the rail, the wheel passing over his right leg just above the ancle, and smashing it completely. The unfortunate man was conveyed to the Hospital, when the doctors found it necessary to amputate his leg just above the ancle. Brown was well known in the Province—he having been some time since captain of the “ Bluenose” Rteamer, running on the Waikato river. We fancy there must be a great deal of carelessness somehow in the working of the line. It is only a few days since one of the men started a truck full of quartz, down an incline, without ever hooking on the wire rope, the consequence of which was that the truckwas smashed and all the stone lost—nothing worse than a pecuniary loss accruing, though that was more bygood luck than hy r good management. Brown, who has been employed on the line for more than two years, and was one of (he best hands on it, has a wife and family. It is intended to start a subscription list for their assistance whilst he is laid up.
