COROMANDEL.
(FROM OUR OWN COHUHSJ’OXDEXT. ) Coromandel, Jan. 23. The hush fire is still smouldering, and only requires a good breeze to fan it into a llaine again. The sufferers arc more numerous than was supposed, and the loss of property is estimated at £BOO. This amount does not seem particularly formidable, but when it is taken into consideration that it falls chiefly on miners and woodsmen,.some of whom have lost in a few minutes the savings of months, the subject assumes a more serious aspect, and the idea naturally suggests itself, what can be done to alleviate their sufferings or render their losses as light as possible. Subscription lists have been opened on the range, and at the Royal Hotel, and an amateur theatrical performance is to he given for their benefit. Perhaps something of the kind might be got up at the Thames if some charitable individual took the initiative. I merely throw out the hint.
Alining matters on the ranges have been very slow for the last few days. Quartz lias been accumulating in the Tokatea Gold Mining Company’s paddock, and that of many other companies ; hut all communication with the batteries lias been out off by the damage done to the tramway, and the repairs will not be effected for a day or two The beach claims arc looking well, and most of them are being worked vigorously, and with spirit. The Neptune have commenced a tunnel at a low level, which, when completed, will give a hack of about -15 U feet, and the stone is improving the lower it is worked on. The shareholders need fear no further calls.
The Golden Bah is finding gold-hearing stone throughout the winze it is sinking to meet the cross-drive, and there is a prospect, and every indication, of being in close proximity to it.
The Green llarp”has finished the tramway throughout the upper-level tunnel, and rich-looking stone is being taken in large quantities from tltc slopes. It is a pity that this company does not send some, 40 or f)0 tons to the machine (there are, I suppose, about 200 tons in paddock), as a good result would raise the character of all the claims in the neighbourhood.
The Golconda is still keeping the Hil Desperandum battery employed, and giving the carters as much work as they can manage to perform. The tunnel at a low level is now within a few feet of the leader, and it is expected there will be found a great improvement in the stone. The Royal Charlie, the next claim at the foot of the spur, have cut the Golconda leader, but are pushing on in Lopes of meeting with another and a better one. The claims immediately above and on the same line of reef are driving vigorously for the Golconda leader, and the names ef the Green Flag, the Moonlight, and the Morning Star will soon be heard of in the sharemarket.
