THE Thames Guardian AND MINING RECORD. FRIDAY , JANUARY 19, 1872.
Wk liopc to sec a Municipality established at the Thames, believii.g that it will confer great advantages if properly established; but we certainly thiuk it a great mistake to attempt to extend its boundaries beyond the limits of the Highway Districts of Waiotahi, Kauwaeranga, and Parawai, if a majority of the residents are in favour of it, but we should he sorry to see a corporation forced upon an unwilling community. We believe the majority of the inhabitant householders of Grahamstown and Shorthand are in favour of a municipality being established ; but it is quite certain that the residents up the crocks and outside the boundaries of the Highway Districts are adverse to it, and quite naturally. They think, and most likely with good reason, that their burdens will bt- increased without their obtaining
any corresponding advantage, and that the townships on-tiie fiat will reap the benefit at their expense. They also couv plain that the municipal committee, has not called another meeting eo that a full discussion could take place as to the boundaries. The meeting of the residents on the Waiotnhi, at the Golden Age, is evidently only one of a series that will soon be held to protest, against the extension of the Corporation boundary beyond the limits of the existing Highway Districts. We think the Municipal Committee will do well to meet the wishes of the residents in the outlying portions of the goldfield, who certainly should not be Jncluded in the Municipality if they do not wish it, and if their views are not met, we fear that counter petitions will bo got up, and the great benefit of a Municipality will be delayed, if not indefinitely postponed. It certainly seems in accordance with common sense that the boundary should not extend inland beyond the base of the hills ; and we hope the committee will have the good sense to sec the folly of attempting to push it beyond in the face of decided opposition. If they do so they will defeat their own end, and probably prevent a great want being supplied for some time. Many of the residents outside the district boundaries are also ratepayers in Grahamstown and Shortlaml, and they do not, so far as we can learn, object to be rated for their properties in the townships under a Municipality, but they do object to their residence sites on the goldfield beyond the base of the hills being subjected to extra taxation. We should like to see unanimity in this matter, and we believe, if the Municipal Committee confine their boundaries to those we have pointed out, they will do a wise thing.
The Warden sat yesterday at the Courthouse, Grahamstown, and disposed of the case of Morgan v. Interlude No. 2, G.M.G'o. The Warden granted a re-hearing in the case of Mcllhone v. Penn, and the Court then adjourned until Tuesday. Mr J. J. O’Neill, C.E., arrived here yesterday by the “Golden Crown,” having received instructions from the Hon. Mr Ormond, Minister of Public Works, to mark oif on the ground the high and low level lines of intended water-race for this field, and which will be inspected in a few days by the Minister of Works and Eugineer-in-Chief. Sir P.rogden has gone to the Waikato, we understand, and during his visit he is likely to inspect the coal mines and other points of interest along the line. In all probability he will go through to Taupo. and thence by the Lakes to Taurauga and the East Coast. ■Such a journey would give him a fair idea of the capabilities of a large section of the interior. — Herald.
