AUSTRALIAN MINING ITEMS
The Windeyer correspondent of the Western Post says: —Crushings have been going on for the last week or two at Mrs Tucker’s reef: the first four tons yielded loz. 13 dwts. to the ton, but the latter lot has turned out over 2 oz. to the ton. A company, I hear, has been formed, and many of the shareholders are Mudgeeites, and I presume that at the commencement of the new year they will make a start. Another nugget was got at Long Creek, last Monday week, by Burbridge and Thomas, it weighed 2oz 14dwts. A nugget was also gut a few days later in the same locality, which was valued at £lB ; but these nuggets are like angels’ visits, few and far between, but when they do come they are very acceptable. A correspondent of the Monaro Mercurij writing from Kiandra says:— At the Charcoal Reef, the labours of the engineer have brought about a most satisfactory state of affairs. The miners have sunk the shaft considerably, and we believe the reef was cut on Wednesday last at a depth of 7()feet. The proprietors of the reef anticipate a very payable return, and attribute the now successful working of tho reef to the skill of their engineer. A second shaft has been sunk at Charcoal, and the water is completely kept down by the pumps. It is stated that the Chinese miners are doing very well. The Nerrigundah correspondent of the. Kiama Independent says : —There is likely to be a stir in business down here before long, for two parties have commenced sinking on a copper lode, which, I am inclined to think, will turn out to he remunerative, Another party from Melbourne in search of gold are, I hear, about to turn the river by means of a cutting or tunnel through a point or isthmus, which will leave about a mile and a half of the river bed dry, and allow of the precious metal being dislodged from its hiding place. Our Nundie, Peel River, correspondent, under date 30th December, says :—During the week wc have had a sprinkle of rain at intervals, still the miners are in the same predicament—want of water. It is much to be deplored to see such a fine field for labor as this neglected for the want of active spirited men. This locality is in every way suited for extensive mining operations, similar to California, more so than any other part in New South Wales. The Reel River divides the land as it were into distinct States ; tho eastern side is Crown lands, and lays claim to one Half of the river stream ; on this side all the principal mining operation are at present carried on, and of course on this side nothing in the shape of extensive mining can be done. Gold from Grafton. —A very rich collection of specimens of gold quartz obtained twenty-five feet below the surface, at the Solferino reef, about forty miles from Grafton, Clarence River, arc now on view at Messrs William McDonnell and Co’s., George-street. Some of the specimens, all the quartz being of a reddish colour, arc almost covered with scales of the glittering metal.
Hawkins’ Hill, Tamiiakoora. Mr Verc, who has a good knowledge of mining matters, has como to Sydney to fi«>:it a company in his new lease, under the Limited Liability Act. The ground by the lessee is said to be equally as auriferous as any of the claims in its neighbourhood, and the quartz is rich gold-bearing. The terms in which this lease is offered to the public is in 9000 shares of 20s each. The claim alluded to is of four acres, and as above stated situated at Hawkins’ Ilill. Mr Vcre first contemplated putting it in the Melbourne market, but as be lias met with some inducement in Sydney, it will be started here. .
