POLICE COURT.— Yesterday.
Before W. Fraser, Esq., RAX. Drunkenness.— Thomas Lee and John Erasmus were each lined 10s with the alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment for being drunk the previous night. Furious Riding. —Joseph Wcsthcad, a youth apparently about 18 years old, pleaded guilty to the charge of furiously riding a horse on the Tararu road, on the 11th inst., but said the train had frightened the animal.—Mr Bullcn said the defendant’s horse had knocked over a child who, however, was not seriously hurt.—A witness named Meredith proved that the train was 100 yards in front of defendant. —The R.M. inflicted a fine of 40s or 3 days’ imprisonment. Defendant said he would “ take it out.” John McMenamin and Edward Reid were charged with furiously riding on the Tararu road, on the lltli inst., and pleaded not guilty.—Constable Coughlan stated that lie saw the defendants riding furiously, apparently engaged in a trial of speed between the two horses, lie called to them, hut they didn’t take any notice. The offence was committed within the boundary of the Waiotahi Highway District.—James Butterworth gave corroborative evidence. John McKnight stated that he saw defendants riding at full speed.—The defence was that defendants had only' indulged in a smart canter. —The R.M. said the evidence was conclusive, and lined defendants -10 s each and costs, with the alternative of 3 days’ imprisonment.
