OHINEMURI.

ONE NATIVE SPEARED BY ANOTHER. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT, ) January 10. WE had a very pleasing little arrangement yesterdav ( when To Hira visited the new steamer Effort. There is great satisfaction hero that such a fine vessel should bo placed upon our line. Coining events must, however, be casting their shadows before, when an old man, who could not be seen a year oa two ago, now goes on board a steamer, and treats himself to a bottle of beer.

Wehad, however, anative arrangementof not quite so pleasant a character soon afterwards. A native woman, the wife of Marsh, a native policeman, has had a little intrigue with Takerc, one of the sons of Lydia, of Coromandel. Yesterday, the gay Lothario conveyed to his lady fair a billet doux, stating that he was going to Coromandel, and if the lady would accompany him, he would be happy, “ leastways almost ’appy.” The lady “ saw it,” and started after her lover. A relative of the lady found the Mercury who carried the loveletter, in the shape of a tall Maori, and made a thrust of a spear at him, which only escaped being fatal by the man using his hand to ward off the thrust. The man’s hand was pierced through. I lie name of the native who used the spear is AVynyard. A great native trial is now going on about the matter, at which nearly all the native population is present. I hope the police authorities will not trouble about this matter.

We yesterday were honoured by a visit from the member for Onehunga, Mr John Lundon, who is to be a,guest at the settlement of Te Moananni,
