ANOTHER ISLAND MASSACRE.

Intelligence lias reached Sydney of tho murder at the Island of Espirtu Santa, of Thomas Turnbull, mate of tho whaling barque Adventurer, belonging to Alessrs Towns and Co. Air Turnbull, who lias so unfortunately met bis death by the bands of the savages, was about forty-eight; years of age. He bad only lately sailed out of this port, but had been many years employed in whaling out of Tasmania. The barque, it seems, put into Espiritn Santa, which is one of the largest islands in the New Hebrides, in a leaky condition, and while she lay in port Air Turnbull, who lias had a large experience among the islands, landed for the purpose of trading for j'atns, and while on shore the natives clubbed him. It is stated that heretofore having been much accustomed to intercourse with the islanders, lie would venture freely among any number of them entirely without protection. He always bore a name among them for kindly treatment, which of course gave him the greater confidence. His wife died in Sydney about a year since, and by the murder of Air Turnbull, six helpless orphans arc left upon the world, the eldest being sixteen years of age and the youngest only two years old. A subscription is by some kind friends being set ou foot, and it is to be hoped that it will meet with the response that tiie painful circumstance of the case demands. —Sydney Empire.
