The WcUhvjton Independent regards tbe appointment of Mr Houghton as Undersecretary for the Goldfields, as only the first step towards the General Government taking tbe management of tbe goldfields of the colony into its own bands. A. P. Seymour, Esq., lias resigned his scat in the Legislative Council. This step was necessary before contesting the election for the Wairau against Mr J. Ward.

Tbe manufacture of hosiery by machinery is about to be commenced in Dunedin. The wool to be used will be that spun at Mr Bum’s mill, at Mossgiel. Thomas William Maude, Esq., lias been appointed Secretary to the Resident Minister for the Middle Island.

Two lads sentenced by the Mayor of Dunedin to six hours’ imprisonment, and to be whipped, for stealing cherries from a garden, underwent their llagellation a few days ago. The Canterbury farmers arc getting afraid of the scarcity of labour, the railway works having absorbed all the surplus. Colonel Brett has given notice of a motion in (he Provincial Council to the following effect: —“That in the opinion of this Council it is desirable that all public works be suspended from the 10th January to tbe 10th March, 1872, to enable the farmers to gather in their harvest.”

The Wellington Regatta is advertised for the anniversary of the settlement — the 22nd instant.

Several cases of sunstroke amongst children have occurred lately on the West Coast goldfields. The thermometer in some places ranged as high as 90 in tbe shade.

Two young pigs were littered recently at East Taieri, Otago, each with two noses. The upper nose in each case resembled an elephant’s trunk.
