THE Thames Guardian AND MINING RECORD. MONDAY , JANUARY 15, 1872.

We think the public with ourselves ■will rejoice to learn that proofs of the success of Mr Mackay’s negotiations arc beginning to manifest themselves. Mr Floyd’s stall'have since Christmas, been diligently employed laying off the line from the junction with the present line, distance about two miles from this, to Omalni, thence to the mountain range, passing through a dense forest of about twelve miles. The forest department is in charge of Mr Haling, who has had considerable experience on the Taupo lines of roads and telegraphs. ; The contractors, Messrs Dixon and Brothers, have no less than 80 men working on the line, and expect before the end of next week to have 100, thereby taking advantage of the tine weather and long days.

If the contractors meet with no impediments on the line, which in our opinion there is little probability, so long as Messrs Floyd, Mackay, and the Dixons work heartily and with a good will to push the progress of the works on, but that we shall have this line connected with the South long before the contract time. On Saturday we witnessed the first wires which are to connect us with the Southern provinces, being attached to this station, and it is not unreasonable in us to assure our readers that the line wdl progress and be completed shortly if no European influences are brought to interfere and interrupt the present arrangements.
