CHRISTMAS SPORTS.
Second Day. Yesterday the weather was delightful, and a large number were attracted to Tararu to witness the sports. The programme was resumed from the day before, and gone through in regular order. The first event of the day was 1. HURDLE RACE (110 yards). Entries, os. First prize, L 5 ; second. Li.'.
For this there were five entries, and the handicap was made on the ground. R. Bach was never caught by those behind, coming in a winner, Manning being a good second, and T. Bach close up third. The following are the handicaps as made : —Manning, scratch ; T. Bach, 27 yards ; R. Bach, 35 yards ; Sutcliffe, 35 yards ; Lukey, 40 yards. The 14 mile flat race for local horses, brought only three horses to the post, and after a good race, they came in as follows :
Minnie Athol, lOst. libs. - 1 Fannie, Gst. lOlbs. - -2 Fish, 7st. Tibs. - - 3 FLAT LACE (150 yards)—Entries, ss. First prize, L 5; second, L2. Tv. Bach, 5 yards - - 1 E. Nolan, 7 yards - -2 The following also ran :—II. 11. Manning, scratch ; Bevan, 2 yards; Dunlop, 4 yards ; Drake, 4 yards ; and J. Twohill, 7 yards. This race was rather a surprise to a great many. Manning ran well, but could not go through his men. Bach won in splendid style, and Nolan also lan well for second place.
4. HALF MILE LACE (Handicap)—Entries. os. First prize, L 5 ; second, L2. Dunlop, 15 yards - - 1 Drake, 17 yards - -2 Manning, 8 yards ; and J. Twohill, 35 yards ; also ran. Dunlop ran strongly and well, and was never behind after passing Twohill. Manning could not get to the fore at all, so’the result was left to the two strangers, who came in at their ease. 5. PONY LACE (under 14 hands)—Catch weights. Entries, lOs (id. First prize, L 7 ; second, to save his stakes. For this eight ponies were measured, several being turned back for being too large. It was a good race for the first time round, and also the second between the winner and the grey pony, which ran well the day before. The winner, a pretty little animal, is the property of Meremana Konui, a native of Shortland. 0. TILTING IN THE LlNG—Entries, 10s. (3d. First prize, LG ; second, L 3 Manning, 17 rings - - 1 Baker, {) rings - -2 Filzmorris, 8 rings - - 3 The following also competed, and took the number of rings which are attached to their names: Baffin, 3; Hayward, 3; uir, 4 ; Tucker, 5 ; Wells, 2 ; Taylor, 3 ; Rawdon, 5; Sutcliffe, 7 ; Rountree, (5. Manning got 17 out of a possible 30, and dropped two off his lance, making the splendid score of 11) altogether. 7. RUNNING HOP. STEP, aud LEAP— Entries, 2s Gd. First prize, L2 ; second, LI. E. Bach, 32ft. 2in. - - 1 A. Porter. 31ft. lOin. - -2 Bevan also competed, but hurt his foot, so could not let out properly, leaving the result between Bach and Porter. 8. GLAHAMSTOWN CUP of 15 sovs.—2 miles (handicap), Entries, LI Is Faugh-a-BeJlegh, 13st. Tibs. - - 1 Minnie Athol, Dst. 71bs. (carried list.) 2 This race was a gift to the Auckland horse, who won as he pleased. The owner of Minnie Athol carried nearly two stone over his weight, in order to get the race off, the other horse objecting to run unless he did so. 8. LADIES RACE (Handicap). First prize, a Silver Mounted Ladies’ Companion presented by Mr Lewissou ; second, a Silver Knife, Fork. a. d Spoon, also presented by Mr Lewissou ; third, a neatly Trimmed Hat. Lizzie Costello, scratch - 1 Mary M'Donald, 8 yards -2 Julia O'Neil, 10 yards - 3
Emma Colts, Mary Jane Floyd, Kato Davy, and Bridget Holly, also ran. This was a most amusing affair, the young ones letting out amazingly, the winner especially. 10. MILE RACE (Handicap)—Eutrics. os. First prize, LG ; second, 1/2. Dunlop - - - 1 Williams - - -2
Drake also ran. Williams ran splendidly, surprising everybody near the finish by a splendid spurt. Drake fainted near the end when pushed, leaving the other two to finish alone.
12. CONSOLATION HANDICAP, 300 yards. First prize, L 3 ; second, LI 10s. Bevan, scratch ... 1 Sutcliifc, 8 yards ... 2
Nolan, scratch, G. Young, 7 yards, J. Twohill, 5 yards, and Lukio, 12 yards, also ran. NTolan fell when in front near the winning post, and Bevan came in a few feet ahead of Sutcliife.
14. STEWARDS RACE (200 yards)—Prize, Gentleman’s Dressing Case, presented by Mr. J. Flemming, Hairdresser. Ballin, 7 yards ... 1 T. Sandes, scratch ... 2 McLoughlcn, 5 yds. ... 3 Rountree, 4 yards, Spence, 8 yards, and Lewisson 20 yards, also ran. Sandes could not get past his men until getting into the straight, when he passed all but Ballin, who won a good race by a yard. Lewisson ran splendidly, leading nearly tbe whole way round, and when the race was over he was shouldered and carried to the booth amidst great cheering. The pig with the greasy tail caused a great deal of amusement, as did also the bell race, for which ten competitors entered. The whole affair went off capitally, first-rate order being kept all day long. After the regular programme had been' gone through, Air Lewisson gave two prizes to be run for by the boys on the course, which resulted in two capital races. He will give a prize to the youngest again, to-day after the programme has been finished.
