Assaulting a Constable, —Catherine Clarke was brought up on remand, charged with assaulting Constable Pn: cell iu the execution of his duty, on the 90th instant, by striking him on the neck and breast with her clenched fist. She was fuithcr charged with making use of obscene language.-—Mr Miller and Mr Dodd appeared for the defence.—For the first offence she was sentenced to one month’s hard labor, and for the second to a line of £l. or a week’s incarceration. Monday December 25. (Before H. Gold«mitb, Esq., J.P.] Drunkenness. —Three persons charged with being drunk, were each fined in the

mitigated penalty of ss. (on the strength of its being Christmas day), and one case of obscene language was disposed of by the infliction of a penalty of 10s. Stealing from the Person. —John Stevens and Patrick Shine, with feloniously stealing from the person of Richard Buggs, at Grahamstown, on the 24th instant, the sum of £7 10s, Avsre remanded for a AYcek. Tuesday, December 26. Suspected Thief. Robert Donn Avas charged with frequenting public places for the purpose of committing felony.— From the evidence adduced it appeared that the prisoner was seen on the beach at Grahamstown in close proximity to a man named John Ryder, who was lying asleep, into whose trouser’s pocket he Avas observed to insert his hand. Ryder was known to have money in his pocktt just before, but on waking up had none.— Detective Murphy deposed to the prisoner being a convicted thief.—The Magistrate having heard the evidence, sentenced the prisoner to three months’ hard labour.
