BRISBANE. Wednesday, Dec. 13. The House met at the usual hour. The Treasurer moved the suspension of the Standing Orders to permit a money bill to pass through all its stages in one sitting. Mr King raised the question of privilege, on which Mr Brainston rose to a point of order, the Opposition talking against time professedly on the point of order. They don’t intend to allow the Treasurer’s motion. Thursday, Dec. 14. Last night the Opposition members all left tho House except Mr Lilley. At half-past nine ho called attention to the state of the House ; through a blunder the Government were left without a quorum, and the house was counted out. To-day, being one for general business, the Government supporters refused to make a House. MELBOURNE. Thursday, December 14. Mr Sullivan addressed the electors of the South Provinces last night. He delivered a long speech, in which he expressed the opinion that the Legislative Council was a mere Court of Review, and could not act in opposition to the will of the Assembly. The vine disease has made its appearance in the vicinity of Melbourne. Mr Hopkins, the owner of the racehorse Nimblefoot is insolvent. The cause is said to be losses from horseracing. The funeral of the remains of the late Rev George Mackie was largely attended. The Bishop of Melbourne anil clergy of all denominations were present, also several public bodies. The Pilot Board gave their decision in reference to the late collision; the captain of the steamer 4 Alhambra ’ was to blame for an error of judgment, but the Board returned his certificate. The Treasurer inspected the harbour fortifications to-day. A company has been launched for working the Mary River at Gympie, Queensland ; there is an influential directory, and it is well spoken of. Mr Grant, Minister for Lands, visits Sydney-during the holidays. The Divorce Court is sitting, and two decrees have been granted. A cake of gold, 3,000 ounces, from Hustler’s claim, at Sandhurst, is coming down. For the Australian Cup the entries arc : —Flying Dutchman, Mameluke, Darkie, Saladin, Valentine, Countess, Chancellor, Young Magenta, Warrior, Mabel, Mermaid, Komula, Lapdog, Juanita, Foam, Glencoe, Nimblefoot, Planet, Lady Clifden, Hamlet, The Baron, Little Dick, Pyrrhus, Pearl, By long. The entries for The Ace and Kingfisher were five minutes late ; and that for Daybreak, forty minute* late. The ‘Shanstons,’ from Mauritius, reports the loss of the clipper 4 City of Venice,’ from Glasgow to Bombay, on Roderiquez Island ; the boats with the crew were rescued by tho ‘Shanstons/ and taken to the Mauritius ; the Captain of the ‘Venice’ was censured there, by the Marine Board for carelessness.
There is no change in wheat or flour ; kerosene sold freely in large lines at Is 10(1. The proposition of Sir James Martin will, it is understood, be accepted by the Government of Victoria ; the sum collected iu excess, if any, being probably adjusted at the end of the year. The cabinet and chairmakers are on a Btrikc for 9s per day. Messrs Goyder and other sporting publicans, have been warned by the licensing bench to discontinue betting business at their taverns, at the risk of the forfeitures of their licenses. The movement for the amalgamation of the legal professions is a failure. Adelaide wheat is at 5s 9d to 5s lid per bushel; maize dull at 3s lOd. Kerosene is hardening ; Devoe’s being quoted at Is lOd. Sugar a shade easier. Messrs Power, Rutherford and Co., report:—35,000 sheep and lambs, and 1,200 head of cattle, were yarded yesterday. Prime quality sold at rather better prices, but inferior sheep were difficult to quit. We quote best bullocks, £9 to £lO ; cows, £6 to £7. ALBURY. Wednesday, Dec. 13. At a meeting held last night, a strong feeling in favour of separation, and a committee was appointed to collect statistics for the consideration of another meeting, to be held early in January. One principle argument adduced was, that ltiverina is now in as good a position, as respects revenue and population, as Vic- * via and Queensland, when these colonics were separated from New youth Wales.— Herald. DUBBO. Wednesday. A meeting to establish a Pastoral and Agricultural Association for the northwestern district, was held last night. There was a large number of squatters, farmers, and others present. Mr Ryrie, of Eurotnedia, was in the chair. It was decided to form a North-western Pastoral and Agricultural Association, holding its exhibitions annually at Dubbo. About £IOO was subscribed in the room. —Ibid. MELBOURNE. Wednesday. Ilis Excellency the Governor and family will attend Mr Anthony Trollope’s lecture, for the beneiit of the Caxton Fund, on Monday next. Rosenwax still refuses to answer questions put to him in the Insolvent Court, and remains committed to gaol. A meeting of the Bar was held to-day, the Attorney-General in the chair. A proposition for the amalgamation of the two branches of the profession was di > j cussed, and also the desirability of esta- | hlishing a College of Justice. An amendment against amalgamation, proposed by Mr M'Pherson, was carried by 45 to 23. i The meeting was large and influential. Further evidence was taken by the Pilot Board in relation to the collision be- | tween the steamer Alhambra and the brig African Maid ; a decision on the case will be given to-morrow. The land warrant regulations have passed the Executive, and there will be no delay in the payment of claims. Additional magistrates will shortly be gazetted. Mr Longmore opposes the resumption of Sunday trains on the main line of ] railway. The ‘ Albion ’ goes into the New Zeajlf land trade, and sails for Auckland on Mil Saturday. Subscriptions have been commenced for the family of the Rev. A frightful tragedy occurred at Heame Hill 4 Newtown, on the 10th. A man named Kishere, who has been drinking heavily lately, got up that morning and tried to drown himself in a tank. His wife rescued him. Shortly afterwards, while she was lying in bed, she was stabbed in the back by her husband, who afterwards smashed in her head with an axe. He then cut his own throat.
