The eclipse expedition was a failure, the weather being wet and cloudy at the time of the sun’s obscuration. The wife of a free selector named Murphy has been found murdered in a hut near Cathcart. Four garotting cases have occurred in Sydney, recently. Platt, a clerk in the Commercial Bank at Carcoar, is missing. Richer, formerly a publican at Geelong, nearly murdered his wife and then committed suicide. At Melbourne, Hallenstein’s factory, near Footscray, lias been partially destroyed by fire, occasioning a loss of £3,000. 8.50 p.m. In the Council to-day, the Provincial Secretary, in reply to Mr Mitchell, said the Government had no power to refund money received during 18(37 and 1868 for business licenses on the goldfields. He stated the proper mode of procedure would be by petition. The amendment to the Common Schools Acts, for the separation of the offices of Secretary and Inspector, was carried, the joint salaries not to exceed £SOO. The Council was prorogued at 5 o’clock. The Superintendent, in his speech, said that all the addresses sent to him would receive due consideration. He spoke strongly against the action of the Council in voting £IOOO for aFree Public Library. Their decision clearly showed that such institutions were not so much appreciated in Auckland as they are elsewhere. The Hospital Reserves Act and the Hospital Reserves Sales Act have been kept back for the Governor’s assent. Ho had also advised the Governor to withhold his assent from the Albert Barracks Military Reserves Act.
