ARREST OF BRIGHAM YOUNG.

Thu Daily Notes publishes the following telegram from its New York correspondent, dated October 2 :—“ Brigham Youug was arrested yesterday on a charge of lewdly cohabiting with 1(1 women, and will be indicted in the United States Court. Troops have been sent to Salt Lake City, but resistance is not expected.” The telegram was received at first with some incredulity, but it has been explained by the American papers since received. Chief Justice McKean, of the Third United Slates District Court, has, it appears, determined to put the laws of the Union in force against the polygamists. On the 18th of September, at the opening of this Court, when jurors were being sworn, Mormons were challenged and set aside on the ground (derived from their own admissions) that “ church revelations were superior to the law,” and that polygamy was not therefore to be regarded as adultery. All polygamists were “ excused ” from serving on the grand jury ; and the Chief Justice, in his charge, called upon that body to enforce the laws without fear or favour. The people of Utah were, he said, amenable the laws of the United States, and “ men of influence who in practice defiantly trample upon the laws, and by precept teach others to do so, should be the first to feel the grip of the law, rather than the obscure men whom they had misled.” These remarks were evidently pointed at Brigham Young, and the telegram above quoted shows that the hints of the Chief Histice have been acted upon.
