The House went into committee and the bill was committed with various amendments. The Provincial Secretary will be the only representative of the Executive on the new Board. The clauses empowering the City Board and the Thames Highway Board to elect members were struck out. Progress was then reported. The following estimates were passed : Harbour Works, Shortland, £250 ; Moanataiari Aqueduct, £650 ; beach road from Shortland to Grahamstown, £4,000. The supplementary estimates include a sub-inspector of police at the Thames, £250 ; and a road on the southern boundary of the goldfields, £3OO. Mr Philips has been re-elected Mayor of Auckland, with a salary of £250 per annum. Auckland, 8.51. At the inquest on the fire at Hawkeswood’s Foundry, an open verdict was returned, and a rider added to the effect that “ It was not safe to al’ow a foundry in temporary buildings in close proximity to dense populations.” At the Coromandel Excelsior meeting, the report and balance-sheet were presented. The manager reported favourably, but regretted the want of funds to prosecute work. In the Council to-dayCarlcton’s Responsible Government Motion was lost on the voices. Address to Superintendent requesting him to refer Thames Harbour Works to Colonial Engineer for adoption. Motion for payment of £l5O to Mining Board negatived.
