RAILWAY IN THE VALLEY OF THE THAMES. £250 VOTED FOR THE THAMES MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE. £IOOO ) VOTED FOR INCREASED ASYLUM ACCOMMODATION. Auckland, 8.55 p.m. In the Provincial Council Mr C. F. Mitchell presented a petition from the Europeans and Natives at Ohineinuri. It was read and received. The Provincial Secretary said the the land , was available for Volunteer scrip.,' , ; Mr Beveridge asked, the Government whether Mr Mackay had been offered a seat in the Executive, and if so, wliy had he declined. The Provincial Secretary said he would require notice of the question. The sum of £I,OOO was voted for increased asylum accommodation. Mr Mitchell’s motion, “ was there to be any railway constructed at the Thames under the Public Works Act, and if there was that it should be up the Valley of the Thames to the East Coast,” caused a very angry, discussion. It was ultimately carried. A vote of £250 towards the Thames Mechanics’ Institute was carried.
