CRICKET.

Ox Saturday a match was played on the T.C.C. ground, Shorthand, between the first eleven of the club and the next sixteen. Both sides Avcrc minus some of their men, the eleven losing the services of Steadman, Dixon, and liulme, and tho sixteen, Wardcll and Schofield, who played with the eleven. The sixteen having won tho toss put the eleven in, and commenced splendidly. Howard and Barnett Avere the first two to represent the eleven, Lasccllcs and Crawford bowling. Howard hit one for three, and Avas bowled by Lascelles. Clayforth took his place, and in Lascolles’s next over, shared the same fate after scoring only 2. Barnett Avas soon after caught at cover point after scoring 9, one 4, one 3, and one 2. Alpe joined Robinson, who had begun well, but was almost immediately caught by Tookey, for 2 runs. Mnddock and Robinson made a few runs together, when the latter Avas run out, and shoitly afterwards Maddock put his leg where his bat should have been and retired for 3. Dr Croft scored 1, as did Eyton. Saudes, Pulleiuc, and Schofield not managing one between the three of them. The extras were very numerous amounting to2o, out of a total of 4G runs. Lascelles howled very-successfully, taking G Avickets out of tho 10. Everything now seemed in favor of the colts, who were facetiously offered a run apiece before going in, which offer, of course, they indignantly refused, Robinson bowled two wickets in the first over, Howard 1 ; Robinson 2 in his second, and Howard also 2, making 7 wickets for 4 runs. In their next over they took one each, and gave 3 runs, i) Avickets for 7 runs. A maiden for Robinson’s next over, and a Avicket for Howard 10 for 7 runs, 11 for 15, and nothing more being scored, the colts retired for a total of 15, being not quite one each. Everybody Avas disappointed, as from the way they got tho eleven out, they were thought to ha\’c a good chance, being considered good for at least 50, but the fates were not propitious, and the above Avas the result. The eleven Avent to the Avickets again, and scored 93 with 4 Avickets to fall, when time was called. Fielding all round was an improvement on former matches, in fact if the fielding had been as good against Auckland, there might have been a different fale to tell.
