THE THAMES POLICE.
To tbc Editor of the THAMES GUARDIAN. Sir, —My attention with others has been directed to the proceedings of the Provincial Council, especially to one item under the heading of the Thames Police, —that they do not intend paying the salary of the Sub-Inspector of Police here. Does Mr Mitchell mean to say this place is not large enough to bear the expense of having a Sub-Inspector? Why, sir, it is a gross insult to this large mining district, and I should propose that if the Provincial Council does not view the above in the proper light, that we lay the affair before the General Government. I have known the present Sub-Inspector for years, and know him to be a tried, highprincipled, generous - hearted officer and friend, both in private and in public duties.—Yours, &c., S. S. Grahamstown, 28th Nov., 1871.
