ARRIVAL OF THE ‘ CITY OF ADELAIDE.’
SYDNEY. November 21. —0 n lltli instant, the deputation from the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales waited on hisExcellcncy the Governor at Government House, to present the Assembly’s minute respecting the death of Bishop Patteson, and the need for prompt interference on the part of the Imperial Parliament with the nefarious “labor traffic” in the islands. —At Nerrigundah, last Monday week, a girl named Ellen Callaghan, whilst fossicking for gold under a stump, was killed by the sudden fall of a mass of earth.—The dead body of a little girl aged, apparently, about three years, was found floating in the river at Free Punt, near Wagga Wagga, last Tuesday week. The new building for the School of Industry lias been commenced at the rear of Darlinghurst gaol.—Another Customs seizure was made by Mr. Fay, of a quantity of samples of drapery, belonging to a passenger by the ‘ City of Melbourne ’ steamer. —lt is stated that a number of young men are being enlisted for Thakambau’s army at the Thames, and at Auckland, New Zealand.—Last Thursday week, a little child named Ryder died suddenly at Grafton of fright.—On the 10th instant, a meeting was held at Ilay, to protest against the resumption of the border duties. Resolutions were passed recommending the Government to accept the proposal made by the Victorian Government.—The Rev. William Francis Xavier Bailey, charged with marrying Robert Strctton, a minor, in December last year, contrary to the provision of the Mam age Act, was convicted
aud sentenced to pay a fine of £SO, and to be imprisoned for a period of six months. —There is great excitement at the _ Ncwstead tin mines, at Invcrell, owing to thecompany having found thglod^wliich MELBOURIdIjPP November 11.—The wreck of the * Loch Levcn ’ was sold in one lot by Messrs Goldsbrough for £2,400. November 14. —The inquiry inMsshe loss of the ‘ Loch Levon ’ resulted m a do-'*'’ 1 cision of the Navigation Board that* the loss of the ship was caused by the captain not taking ordinary precautions, and especially by not taking the hearings when near King’s Island. —At the Ministerial banquet. GOO guests sat down. —The Eclipse. Expedition leaves Sydney on the 27th instant. November 15.—The Rev Air. Clarke’s lecture in aid of the Caxton Centenary Fund, was attended by 2,000 persons.The Asscmby agreed, by a majority of two, to adopt the Council’s amendment of the Railway Bill, striking out 1 lie lino from Geelong to Camperdown. —The Council passed the Alining Loan Amendment Bill.—The Chinese firm of Ah Noy and Co.’s meeting of creditors; liabilities, £IO,OOO. November 10. —Air Goodman has resigned as a director of the National Bank. He considers Air Young was unfairly
treated.—The tender of Alcssrs Cain, Dalrymple, & Ilolden, has boon conditionally accepted for the construction of the last section of North Eastern Railway.
The amount is £350,000. —The Assembly, by a majority of 10, decided in favor of the narrow gunge for the railway.—The Council have thrown out the Eight Hours’ Bill; the AVestern Port Tramway Bill was passed. November 17.—The International Rille Alatcli was won by England score, 550 ; Irish team, 514; Scotch team, 501, Ten men in each team, seven shots each.—The breadstuff markets are unaltered. Sugars are veiy firm. November 18. —The following are tho principal weights for the Ballarat Ciqi Warrior, 9st. 01b.; Nimblcfoot, Bst, 121 b. ; Glencoe, Little Dick, and Alcrmaid, Bst. 101 b. each ; Croyden, Bst. 71b. ; Lapdog, 7st. 121b.—The Horticultural Show at the Botanic Gardens was a success.—Geary has been found guilty of the Colac. murder, committed 17 years ago, and sentenced to death ; his wife was acquitted. Arrived : ‘ Nardoo,’ barque, from Boston. November 20 : Franz found dead in tho scrub on tho Yarra, is supposed to have committed suicide by poison. Ho cauio from the Thames, where lie left a wife and family. —Airs Turner obtained a verdict of £230 damages against Dr. A r an Hemcrt, for maltreatment. ADELAIDE. November 14. —The Treasurer promises his budget on Thursday, and the Education Bill will be introduced to the House on tho following Tuesday. November 10. —Air. Hughes’s motion of no confidence in the new Government was carried —Ayes, 15 ; noes, 15. The Speaker voted with the ayes. November 17.—The Assembly has adjourned till Tuesday, owing to the absence of the Governor ; a dissolution is freely talked of. November 18.—AVlieat is very quiet at 4s Gd. There have been sales of cornsacks at 12s. November 20.—There arc slightly better enquiries for wheat ; but holders do not care to name a price until after the arrival of the mail. lIOBART TOAYN. November 10.—The Treasurer brought forward his budget ; there is no chance of his fiscal policy being adopted by tho Assembly. The deficiency in the Land Fund is to be met by a loan repayable in three years. —A bill for the reduction of the Governor’s salary is promised. November 18.—Captain Clinch, the passengers and crew of the ‘ City of Hobart * subscribed £3O for the widow of the seaman lost during the voyage.—A lire occurred on the premises of Air. Brodribb, Happy Afidley. The owner was injured by the falling of a stable. BRISBANE. November 13. —The Bar of Gold Company struck a reef at Rosewood, at a depth of 20ft.; the prospectors took 1590z5. 15dwts. gold, and 200ozs. mixed metal from two buckets of stone. The reef is traced half a mile on the surface. November 15.—The debate on the address was concluded at midnight; on division it was carried Ayes, 17, Noes, 11. November 17. —In the libel case Lilley v. (Queensland Times and Warwick Examiner verdicts for the plaintiff were returned, damages £3OO and £475 respectively. November 20.—The schooner ‘ Captain Cook’ arrived from Villa Lavelli Island yesterday, bringing Captain and Airs Nicholls, and the crew of the ship 1 Delhi,’ bound from Alanilla to Sydney, with 1,000 tons sugar for the Colonial Sugar Company wrecked on Indispensable Reef on the 14th September. All hands saved in the boats. Captain Ferguson, of the schooner ‘ Captain Cook,’ reports seeing a white woman and child on shore at New Britain Island ; the natives would not permit ony intercourse. Also, that natives reported that a boat containing two white men and two white women had landed on a small island in tho channel between the Duke of York and New Britain Islands. One man was killed by the natives, and one woman died ; the remaining man and woman were sold to the natives of New Britain. BRAIDAVOOD. November 20. —A child named James AlcGrath was bit on the thigh by a black snake on Saturday. He is all right now.— The pumping plant of Reuben’s abandoned reef at Little River was sold last Saturday for 200 guineas. BATHURST. November 15.—A dinner to Air Anthony Trollope takes place this evening, at which a large attendance is anticipated.—Mr. T. Lee’s racehorse, Javelin, was accidentally staked to-day in attempting to jump a fence at King’s Plains. The horse’s life is despaired of. I _ GRENFELL. November 10.—Ilealy Brothers sold Nelson’s one share and an eighth in O’Brien’s prospecting claim to-day for £3,500 cash, to the company. Other sales are spoken of. Considerable activity in reefing is manifest. HILL END. November IG. Heavy gold was struck at Hawkins’s Hill, next Card’s Lease. ADELONG. November 18.—The yield of the AVyuyard Gold Company for the past fortnight is 1470 z. Bdwt. The Research Company crushed, from llGj tons of stone, 52Goz, lOdwt. of gold.
