LATEST FROM THE SOUTH, VIA TAURANGA. Ter OrcTille nnd Co.'s Express, Reuter's Agents. O THE CHALLENGE RIFLE MATCH BETWEEN WALKER OF THE THAMES AND CHRISTIE OF OTAGO. Dunedin, Nov. 21. The challenge rifle match between Chrv.tic of Otago, and Walker of the Thames, was commenced at the Forbury range yesterday, the wind blowing half a gale from the south-west. Two hours were wasted in a dispute about terms. Ultimately Walker altered his sight, and Christie consented to fire off the mounds.
The conditions were—ranges from 200 to 1000 yards, and 10 shots at each range. The scores at the different ranges up to GOO yards are as follows : Christie ...34...33...36...37...32 Walker ...37...33...40...38...36 At 400 yards Walker made the splendid score of 40 points—ten bull’s eyes in succession ; and at 500 yards he made 8 bull s-eyes and 2 centres ; at GOO yards G bull’s-eyes and 4 centres. Christie was the favorite in starting. The betting now 2 to 1 on Walker. The long ranges are to be fired today. Tort Chalmers, Nov. 21. The Queen of the Soutli is at the Heads from the Mauritius.
