ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH.

PRACTICE OF THE “MESSIAH.” Last night, the practice of the choruses in the “ Messiah” took place in St. James’ Church, Pollen street, under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Browne, who had come down from Auckland fertile purpose. The performers mustered to the number of over 50, and all the choruses were gone tlirough in a manner highly creditable both to the singers themselves and to Mr. Mitchell, who has conducted the practises hitherto. After the “ Amen” chorus was concluded, Mr. Browne said that he was indeed astonished at the manner in which the choruses had been sung. He had expected nothing so good when he came down. The bass parls, more particularly, were very steadily and truthfully rendered. He would like to hear as good in Auckland. A little more practice was necessary in some of the choruses, and a little more determination would be an improvement, he considered. He (Mr. Browne) stated that he would bring clown some 50 performers from Auckland, including all the necessary instrumentalists, and in all probability would also send down a large harmonium for the occasion. He thought that there was not the slightest doubt but that the “ Oratorio” would be a great success. Over 100 performers will take part in it.
